I've never seen this movie, but I'm thinking about blind buying the Blu-ray. I've read a few pro and con arguments on it. The con argument is of concern.....basically stating that it's a blantent 90's militant feminist movie. I'm all about impowering women, but in the process, does this film basically dumb down women in it's own way. From the few little clips I've seen, it looks like it could be another mindless "buddy-buddy road" movie. I would like to know if there's any depth to the dialog or the characters in the movie?

Based on the BD movies you reviewed I would say go ahead and blind buy it.
I could say the movie is great or it sucked, but that would only be my opinion. In the end your opinion is what would count. That is why I decided to look at your BD reviews and go from there. Personally though I dont think it dumbs down women, nor is it a 90's miltant feminist movie. I just thought it was on ok movie. |

That's my opinion, so take it for what it's worth. I would suggest renting it, unless you get a real good deal on the price. Last edited by J. J. Hunsecker; 08-05-2012 at 08:30 AM. |

I'd say get it, but then again I'm biased since it's Ridley Scott. At the very least it's a very good-looking film, you never really have to worry about the cinematography in a Scott film to deliver or not.
I do find the plot endearing as well. The performances from Davis and Sarandon are great and they're joined by a terrific supporting cast. I just think it's an all-around great film and I don't find it insulting in any way or form, and it's more than just a simple "road movie". If you're feeling unsure, rent it, but I'm giving a "get it!" recommendation. |

There's a new documentary about the film. Catching Sight of Thelma & Louise - "First-timer filmmaker Jennifer Townsend talks to others who, like her, were deeply affected by the controversial 1991 road movie."

The film's well made and got some great acting from Davis, Sarandon and Harvey Keitel as the cop just trying to stop the madness.
But looking at the film now, it simply doesn't hold up. The script felt too one dimensional to really buy into but credit to Ridley Scott for trying to make something of it in what could've easily been an mean spirited road revenge flick but when you look back at it, it wound up crossing that line at times. I will not delve into the film's controversy but I will say that the film did not exactly put anyone in a positive light. |

It's not a man-hating movie. To boil it down to basics, it's a man's world and as these women see it, men have gotten away with a lot. For Louise, she was raped and the perpetrator got away with it. There was an attempted rape on Thelma and she finally gets angry after being subservient all her life, then kills the man who did it. There's a lot more to it, but that's the gist of what I see. The story could be an allegory for feminism and women's empowerment in a patriarchal world. They do take a more militant route than most would. In the end, they go out on their own terms. I think it's a great movie and the acting by the cast is wonderful. |

THELMA & LOUISE is great. Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis are terrific (and exhibit wonderful chemistry together) and so are the guys: Brad Pitt, Michael Madsen, Christopher McDonald and Harvey Keitel (in what may be his most likable performance) all deliver. By turns dramatic, exciting and funny, I still find this to be one of Ridley Scott's most satisfying films. DP Adrian Biddle's cinematography is gorgeous; the wide-open vistas and landscapes are captured to striking effect (saw this opening day and it was frequently stunning on the big-screen).
Just enjoy the ride. ![]() |
