Would be great if that's the art that they go for. Surprised GKIDS isn't putting this out themselves.

Also, is this going to come with a MA code? That'd be neat.

Doesn't GKIDS release through Universal?

I got a tweet from GKids that they want to keep this in 'select theaters' and a few more bookings if possible in the coming weeks - the only theater I see doing a screening in the Washington DC area is the Old Greenbelt theater but not til March. Hope the nomination actually proves it worth and we can get to see this on the big screen.

If it is not out yet on Home Video in Japan, we may have to wait longer since Anime companies in Japan like a 5-10 month wait to avoid reverse importing.

Reverse-importing? Isn't that the same as exporting?

In this context, it refers to Japanese customers buying less-expensive US releases instead of their more-expensive domestic versions. So they're importing, but it's "reverse" in that usually an originating country's customers usually don't resort to re-importing exported products. It would be like someone in the US importing a Chevy Camero from Japan, for example.

Since Japan and the US share the same BD region code, Japanese licensors have resorted to tactics such as artificially delaying US release dates and forcing discs to have always-on English subtitles when the Japanese audio track is selected in order to combat the "problem".

Anime is still released in volumes in Japan, typically at $50-$60 for 2-4 episodes each. The trade off is way better picture quality (35 mbps+ bitrates on everything) than the s**t by FUNimation and crew here (20 mbps or lower). As such, limitations are imposed when released here-

Subtitles are locked (can’t be turned off) when set to Japanese audio, so say to annoy people in Japan importing them. Video quality is worse, due to cheap tactics on the part of FUNi (or, as we call them now, FAILimation), as well as long delays between the JP release and the international one.

In total- it sucks to be a western anime fan. There are exceptions- Justin Sevakis and the Italian anime wizard mp3dom show that a talented compressionist can make the wait worth it, but that’s rarely the case. Besides Aniplex and some UK releases, we get the short end of the stick.

Yeah, but it's only on a BD-25. Seeing that the Japanese BD (which has zero bonus features on the primary movie disc) takes up 35GB, that means that the video encode for the HK disc will be somewhat badly compromised even after switching out the uncompressed LPCM audio for DTS-HD MA. My guess is that the video bitrate will be about 30% lower (i.e. ~25Mbps instead of the JP release's 36Mbps), and the encode may end up with compression-based artifacting due to that.

I'd recommend that anyone considering importing the HK BD just hold out for however many months it takes and wait for the US release from GKIDS/Universal. Their previous anime releases (e.g. The Tale of Princess Kaguya, When Marnie Was There, and Mary & The Witch's Flower) all turned out quite well technically.

Does GKIDS/Universal have the Canadian distribution rights to this?
There's currently no listing for it on Amazon.ca, and I'd rather not have to import it.

Any one have any bets on what region locking this will have? Universal seems like a lottery most of the time.

Mirai’s Canada distribution rights belong to MK2 Mile End.
