Default AMC Theaters Artisan Films Program

Quote:

The AMC Theatres chain has announced a new initiative, AMC Artisan Films, that will spotlight a curated set of character and narrative-driven movies.

The goal of AMC Artisan Films is to make critically acclaimed films more accessible in a setting with quality amenities and technology. AMC will program specialized movies consistently in select locations throughout the United States, providing what the company terms “consistent and convenient showtimes” for the works.

The AMC Artisan Films program launches with the release of Yesterday, which opens nationwide on Friday. Upcoming films in the program include MidSommar, Blinded By The Light, The Peanut Butter Falcon, Downton Abbey, The Art of Self-Defense, Luce, The Kitchen and Where’d You Go, Bernadette.

The AMC Artisan Films seal will be granted to artist-driven films, the company claims, and will showcase expertise in writing, directing, acting and other components.

“Many consumers don’t realize that we play more elevated and celebrated films than anyone else in North America,” said Elizabeth Frank, EVP of worldwide programming and chief content officer, AMC Theatres. “With the launch of AMC Artisan Films, we aim to expose more movie-goers to specialized films and increase their theatrical success. And we plan to increase consumer access to these special films by seeking earlier runs in platform releases and holding longer in theater to give audiences time to learn about them from other passionate guests.”

The origin of AMC Artisan Films came from a meeting earlier this year between AMC CEO Adam Aron and Frank with the Director’s Guild of America. Director Jon Avnet suggested that it is vital for major theater operators to embrace small and mid-size films. Thus was born the concept to promote and celebrate certain films beyond the blockbusters.

I suppose that’s nice, but I don’t see this as really being different than the AMCi program they had (and were still advertising at least as of a few months ago) focusing on indie films which played at AMC. And also bugs me that many of the films mentioned, starting with Yesterday this weekend and Midsommar next, are wide releases which you would expect to find at many local multiplexes anyway.

The thing is that since I'm a member of their subscription program and there's no incremental cost to see a film, I'm reluctant to spend money to go to an arthouse, even though there are usually more films that I want to see in those theaters than at AMC. So if AMC is going to play more art-house fare, that would be great.

But you know things like this have been promised before. Even before it was owned by AMC, the 3 basement screens at the Loews Lincoln Square in NYC were supposed to devoted to indie films, but that lasted about ten minutes.

But the AMC Empire 25 in NYC has been pretty good at showing Indian films.

I noticed the brochures for it in the lobby tonight. I picked one up. If nothing else it’s a good reminder of what’s coming up. The location I frequent gets a ton of indie and foreign language films already.

So, is there any more to this than putting a gold frame around certain titles in the app?

I had to LOL that The Intruder is included as an AMC Artisan title.

I hope this mean less cruddy Hollywood crap at Tyson's since Showplace Icon is opening their complex in the Fall a stone throw's away - there's gonna be some fierce competition in what both they are going to book and exclusivities.

The Farewell is included, here's hoping more eyes see it being part of this program.

I just noticed the gold frame around a handful of titles in the "coming soon" section of the app.
One of these lesser known films looks like it might be pretty good, its called "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" and it stars some up and coming actors named Leonard Depacrio, Bob Pit and Alan Pachinko.
Im glad that AMC is going to give this film a chance.

finally AMC books 'The Last Black Man in San Francisco' in the DC metro area over at Hoffman - which is not easy to get to via the subway, but by bus and car ... argh, I hate you WMATA.
