I have a Macbook so used iTunes. I selected 320 for higher quality.
I assume you mean ripping your cds.

I don't know anything at all about PC, so can't advise.

I've been mostly happy using Windows Media Player with the settings adjusted for 320 kpbs. However, I am curious to see what other folks recommend--I could have been using flawed, vanilla software this whole time and not realized it.

One of the best audio tools I have is Goldwave, which I primarily use to edit the file itself if I need to--the program can cut, mix, trim, change volume, fade, and do a bazillion other things. It does have a CD ripping feature that has come in handy for me when WMP fails--it might be the more robust software, but it's not free.

I believe Winamp and Musicbee can rip CDs too, I just haven't used them for that purpose.

I use MP3tag to fix tags, file names, and add artwork. I'm not sure what programs will tag and add the artwork automatically--those are aspects I always wanted to control myself anyway.

I've been using Exact Audio Copy for roughly 20 years now. It's free. It's light. The initial set up may be a bit confusing, but there's plenty of documentation out there. Once set up, it's about as easy as it gets. There's different modes - burst for a quick rip or a heavily scratched disc. Or you can do secure for a bit for bit identical copy.

JRiver is one of the best, when it comes to quality in my book. It does DSD and PCM as well, with aplomb.
