Default Apple now pushing HD downloads

Have they become the enemy?

Quote:
Here's what you can do with Apple TV: rent movies directly on widescreen TV with Apple TV. Rent them in DVD quality, rent them in HD with 5.1"

"Dolby 5.1 surround. The quality is unbelievable. You can also view audio and video podcasts right on ATV, choose from 125k podcasts and see them right on your widescreen. Get photos from your computer... get them also right over the internet from Flickr and .mac."

"And, of course, YouTube -- we've expanded the selection. There's now over 50m videos from YT, This has worked out so great, our customers love this. Buy TV shows and music right from your TV. And if you're using a computer it'll sync BACK to your computer."

"I'd like to say all of us have tried. We have, MSFT, Amazon, TiVo, VuDu, Netflix, Blockbuster -- we've all tried to figure out how to get movies over the net onto the TV. We've ALL missed. No one's succeeded yet. We tried with Apple TV -- it was designed to be an accessory for iTunes and your computer. But that's not what people wanted."

"We learned what people wanted was about movies. Movies. Movies. We weren't delivering that -- we're back with Apple TV Take 2 -- It still syncs to your computer, but no computer is required

Apple has been in the business of selling movies on iTunes for a while.

The jump to 720p to regain parity versus Live was a foregone conclussion in my mind.

5.1 audio? Would be nice, if they actually included that on their freakign dvd quality releases for the titles that had it :x.

Also note the keyword RENTALS not download to own.

EDIT: Also they are most likely 720p and use 5.1DD only. At the $4.99 price point per rental it is not cheap.

And of course, Apple continues to insist on reinventing the wheel to assure that their sale medium to tied at the hip to their hardware. Oh well.

Apple does it: People love it, all hail Steve Jobs.
Microsoft does it: Bill Gates is the devil.

I love irony

Yea, I won't use either service though. I prefer just to buy movies that I want to see. I might subscribe to netflix soon so I can check out a movie and if I like it just buy it on blu

This will not be a big deal with only 720P downloads and DD 5.1. People can get this stuff right now on their Xbot 360's and it ain't affecting Blu-Ray. It is too soon for downloading HD movies over the internet.

Default Apple are not the enemy

We all know that in a few years digital distribution of HD flicks will be the norm to some but to me I still prefer a copy of the movie on disc format but I may buy certain movies/TV shows off Apple. Right now I don't think those downloads will live up to most HD enthusiasts expectations because they won't offer a full HD experience.

We all know that everyone will be trying to push HD downloads. But, that doesn't mean the consumer will adopt it.

In the end, what Apple and Microsoft want isn't what the consumer has to accept.

No we all DON'T know that DD will be the norm. Where are you going to store it? Are you going to buy more and more hard drives? Now THAT's cost effective isn't it? You are going to burn them? On what? Unless some new miracle codec comes along, the downloads are STILL going to be large. Larger than a DVD+R or DVD-R.

Apple TV 2.0 will be as successful as Apple TV 1.0. </sarcasm>

Downloads of HD will become big when:

1. Bandwidth increases dramatically and becomes more available and reliable.
2. Home networking becomes a no-brainer for the average consumer.
3. Storage costs decrease dramatically.
4. Other ancilliary technology becomes no-brainers for the average consumer. Things like "how do you back up Terabytes worth of movies?"

Until then, I'll take my BD player and discs, thank you. Apple can take their Apple TV and....never mind.

Apple is pushing rentals not ownership.

No Blu-ray Super Drives is a bit disapointing.

I am as a big Blu-ray supporter as anyone here but he said RENTAL not replacing the disc. There are movies I want to see but don't want to spend $20 for so I love it.

Shall we boycott Apple now too?

Just joshing of course. But like other's have said, I don't think this is anything to worry about. It's just for rentals.

Apple, Netflix, Xbox Live, On-Demand, etc etc are all just going to have to split the HD downloads pie.

Blu-ray will have physical distribution all to themselves. (As soon as someone gives up)

Pushing IP downloads and no Blu-ray support. Shows you what they think of our format.

I don’t even know why they bothered supporting Blu-ray in the first place.

Maybe they have the exact position that M$ had except they support our side instead of the HD-DVD side.

Let the two kill each other and pave the way to internet downloads

Digital downloads are digital downloads. Apple has sold movies that you can keep for some time now.
