I've always noticed this but never really paid attention to it, but how come whenever I watch CNN or CNBC or Fox News (or whatever) in SD and they're showing a guy with a necktie I always see some sort of rainbow on the tie if I focus my eyes on it?
Does it have something to do with my old Sony CRT HDTV (kp65ws500)? Can't it display all the colors in the tie? Does it also happen in blu-rays in HD? |

Without knowing any of a hundred different details of the ties/cameras/resolutions/displays involved - or what you mean by "rainbow"... one guess of what might be going on is a moire effect.

Heh... stay off the shrooms.
j/k Me thinks this happens for 1 of 2 reasons. Either the particular necktie is "shiny" (like all the fashionable ones are... do you hear me, Shanon Sharp!?) and what you see is a prism-like effect as a result of light interacting with the tie. OR it's that the tie has some intricate patterns on it and the camera being used cannot resolve it in detail, resulting in a blend of colors/rainbow effect. I see it, too... just not on every tie. |

Hmm.. on the news? I would think that they would know not to wear a tie that's going to have a moire effect, the camera man would see it on his monitor before they start broadcasting and ask the guy to remove it.

Good cameras typically will record the moire effect i noticed... and the heavier the aliasing filter the less moire but the less sharpness as well. It may be unavoidable without losing sharpness.

I'm tellin' you, check out Shanon Sharpe's tie during the Super Bowl broadcast (if he's part of whatever 9-man army of commentators the NFL picks). His ties always show this effect. He must be big on patterns.
