hey all - ive been going back and forth in my mind about this and I figured id pose this question to more capable minds. Im deciding between a 2018 LG C8 OLED or Samsung QLED. I thought I was set on the OLED but I went to Best Buy and the guy told me that QLED might be the way to go since I watch a lot of sports. Ive currently got a Samsung 4K but its non HDR. Which is why im thinking of making the jump...Some more info below.
-TV will be in a room with one small window so it will be quite dark -mainly used to watch sports, movies on Netflix, Apple TV 4K rentals and 4K blu-rays. Thoughts? |

In most cases, the OLED is the better choice especially for dark room viewing. |

For a dark room like yours I would also recommend the OLED. The Samsung has a very nice contrast ratio and black levels, but as of now it crushes some shadow detail due to the aggressive local dimming and OLED still has the better contrast and black levels anyway. Unless you’re a heavy gamer, I would go with an OLED. The burn-in issue with channel logos seems to have addressed with the C8 as now the TV has a setting that allows it to detect a channel logo and dim it to prevent burn in. Of course if you leave it with the same logo on screen for weeks at a time you might still get it but no one should do that (and why would anyone?).

Truthfully, anyone is a winner, but I would go with the C8 if I have an Apple TV. The OLED takes full advantage of the HDR compared to the QLED. I have yet to see anything in HDR10+. I will say if you are coming from a Samsung the motion processing will be a change compared to your Samsung, but you will adapt. The Q9 is a great LED for 2018 for those love Samsung. If you have this television in the bed that lets me know that it probably will not get much usage.
You can always try it out the C8 and if you don't like you can return it. Believe me when I tell you once you go OLED you never go back! |

Ive been reading about issues with the LG's burn in but I think I read that isn't a problem in the 2017 and newer models. |

Based on what you just stated: It's pretty hard to get burn in with an OLED. You sound like those people that stated that Plasma wasn't good in 2007 and 2008. I ask everyone how many hours do you watch television a day? If you can watch more than 8 hours of television in a day, then you must not have a job or you are a millionaire. Those who have never owned an OLED is because they think its too expensive and it gets burn-in. Maybe the question should be: why is it I still have my Pioneer Elite, but some people are going through their 4th television in 10 years? I have 2 OLEDs an C6 and E7 I love them to death, just like anything else in life:If you take care of anything it will take care of you! |

Just depending on what you are looking for... They have some great deals on the 2018 models, but if you can still find a 65B7A its a win win situation. It just depends on what you are looking for in an OLED. An OLED from 2016 will be better than any LED in 2016 and now! The technology is the Key...

I disagree. The lack of brightness really hurt the 2016 oleds for hdr. If perfect blacks meant everything, then no led could compete with plasma, yet with HDR content, a good led set destroys plasma with HDR content. Since your a 2016 oled owner, you clearly have an opinion to defend your TV. BTW, since u wanna talk about 2016, the LCD KS9800 won the HDTVTest hdr shootout hosted by Vincent Teoh. Oled that year came in 3rd place. The Z9D was not yet so it did not compete, otherwise the Z would have come in 1st place and pushed the oled to 4th place. (that shootout was voted on by the audience) I think the 2018 oleds are the 1st ones to have just the right amount of brightness to be able to match the flagship lcds in hdr dynamics. |

my recommendation (you do not have to wait for Black Friday - compelling deals prevail throughout the year)

How bright do I need the television to be if I'm watching the television in the evening in a dark room. What peak brightness would be the best for my room conditions? ![]() ![]() ![]() Lets compare a 2016 OLED vs 2016 LED, at that time there were very few televisions going HDR and Dolby Vision at that time. Even now, with the Samsung Q9FN being a great television it doesn't take full advantage of HDR at a premium price. The Vizio P-Series Quantum does more that the Samsung Q9FN. ![]() ![]() ![]() It's still up to the consumer to determine which television is best for them, but the OLED is an excellent television. I"m stilling looking for that HDR10+ blu ray disc. Either you can be a consumer of technology or just the Name of a company. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

OLED is still the best technology you can get, if I was getting a new TV I would go with a 77 inch C8, last year the 77 wallpaper TVs were 20k+, it's the first year they release an affordable 77 inch OLED. I'd wait for black Friday or boxing day though.

I missed the deals on BF last year but the 65 C7 dropped to the same price on boxing day so I bought it then. I should have waited though, I really wanted a 77 but it was $25K CAD so it wasn't even an option, over 10K for a TV is way too much for me. I'm really happy with my TV it's perfect, just a little too small IMHO but I save 6K from buying last year so it's not entirely a bad thing.

The Rtings.com site provides a tool to suggest the best TV based on your screen size, room and and viewing habits. While an OLED will not be as bright as an QLED set, the LG is an excellent TV for sports, with terrific motion and grey uniformity ratings, and a much better TV overall, especially for movies. Manufacturers are beginning to prep for BF and get a jump on sales. LG and Sony both have a few offers on the table, and tomorrow Vizio will reduce the price of the 65" P Quantum by $500 to $1,599 at Sam's Club. Personally, I believe there is going to be an abundance of good deals across the board, so you should be in luck. That said, an OLED will typically be more expensive than your other options. |

If you are watching TV with bias lighting, which is the proper environment then OLED from any year are just fine. Most people don't want burned retinas. The only real argument for a little extra brightness is 3D since you are having to compensate for wearing ND filters on your face. Even so, with the proper environment this is no issue. The OP clearly states darkened room, which mean control over light. |

Let's be honest here. People often bang about how dim OLEDs are, but in reality they now have a peak brightness that is higher than most LEDs until very recently.
OLEDs are going to beat any edge lit LED easily IMO. Now the Q9 QLED is very impressive, and when viewed side by side with a B8 and AF8 held it's own and was clearly brighter, but this was in a highly lit shop floor where it was impossible to judge black handling accurately. |
