According to the Deluxe cinema portal, the first trailer for M. Night Shyamalan's follow-up to The Visit, a thriller called Split, will be playing in front of next weekend's release of Jason Bourne. The movie's been finished for a little bit now; Shyamalan posted regular updates on his Twitter about the production/post. He screened it for the studio a few days ago.
I'm definitely looking forward to this as I thought The Visit was a really nice return to form! |

The plot is under wraps at the moment. Shyamalan has divulged it'll be his longest film so far and describes it as "very intricate," "incredibly ambitious for a very small budget," and "a dark twisted story." He claims it was his most challenging shoot ever. It's another "smaller movie" which he says he's grateful for as it gives him time to get it "just right" - he did at least eight editing passes on it. He also set it up so the final three days of shooting would be done after six weeks of editing the principal photography, which he says he also did on The Visit. Principal photography wrapped in December 2015, he finished the first cut in March, and finally finished editing in early July.
James McAvoy is in it, and Shyamalan described his performance as "literally jaw-dropping." It also features Betty Buckley and Anya Taylor-Joy (star of The Witch). One day of shooting was spent "running through tunnels under an old asylum," if that tells you anything. The film opens January 20, 2017. |

The Visit was definitely entertaining much of the way and disturbing at the same time. Looking forward to what else he offers with The Split.
Wayward Pines season 1 was great, which he directed the first episode of, but produced the rest based on a novel. Plenty of twists in that first season. |

I was all like, it sounds really good, I know I shouldn't, but I'll give Shyamalan the benefit of the doubt now that he's doing low budget stuff. Especially if you've got McAvoy.
But then I saw January, and then the fear of god went up me. ![]() |

It sounds like he had a lot of time to craft this one which is encouraging. There's a great cast there. But that January release date....yeah hoping that's not a sign of its quality.

I love James McAvoy and Anya Taylor-Joy was fantastic in The Witch. This also has Kim Director (the goth girl from Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2). I didn't even know she's been acting anymore but I checked IMDB and she's been on a lot of TV shows since then. I always liked her in that movie so I'm interested in seeing her in something else.
I wasn't the biggest Shyamalan fan but The Visit was great. My favorite of his. Also really dug The Village. Sixth Sense was alright. The rest was garbage. |

As for Split, I'll reserve judgement but I have very little hope that Shyamalan will ever return to his younger self and turn out a good movie. Unfortunately first impressions aren't always true and in his case his true ability (or lack of) has become evident as his career has progressed. Most people will say he is a good director that has a run of bad movies. Looking back on his career, it has become evident that he is really just a bad director that got lucky a few times. |
