Default Wham! (Netflix, 2023)

I'm a huge fan of George Michael and Wham!, so I am stoked for this:

Quote:
In 1982, the best of friends and still teenagers - George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley as WHAM! set out to conquer the world.By June of 1986 they played their very last gig at Wembley Stadium having done exactly that. Now for the very first time, told in their own words, the amazing story of how in four years they dominated the charts around the world with timeless and classic pop songs. Hit after hit - Club Tropicana, Wake Me Up Before You Go Go, Freedom, I’m Your Man and of course Last Christmas.

Their time in the spotlight was white-hot, becoming the very first western pop act to play in China. It was a time that both encapsulated and epitomized not just their youth, but also those of the many millions of fans that adored them. WHAM! is a feature length documentary that captures this magical time, from director Chris Smith (Tiger King, Sr.) and producers John Battsek (The Deepest Breath) and Simon Halfon (Supersonic) With unprecedented access to both George and Andrew’s personal archive including remarkable and never-before-seen footage, alongside rare, candid and previously unheard interviews, WHAM! charts their incredible journey from school friends to superstars.

Hahaha, indeed. I remember an old show in the 80s called Video Hits did a mail-in contest and the question was "What's the name of the other guy in Wham?" I'm pretty sure I found the answer in a Muppet Magazine down at the grocery store.

I'm mostly excited about this because there have been a handful of documentaries on George Michael that only briefly touch on his success with Wham!, but mostly in the context of him becoming a solo artist. So to limit the focus to just George and Andrew's band is a refreshing take.

Plus there are SO many rare clips shown just in the trailer alone. Like the outtake of Andrew getting thrown the leather jacket in the Wham! Rap video. It's incredible that dumb footage like that even exists and I am HERE for it.

I wish it had premiered today; my wife and I are home and we'd definitely watch this.

I just finished watching this today, and I had a terrific time with it. My only criticism is that apart from Last Christmas, there’s not really any time devoted to the other singles that would appear on “Music from the Edge of Heaven.” I feel like I could’ve had another 10 minutes or so of that era. But man, the wealth of photos, videos, interviews and music here is pretty incredible.

What I’m the most impressed with is the amount of alternate footage used for the music videos. Did we need to see alternate shots for videos like Wham! Rap, Everything She Wants, Careless Whisper and I’m Your Man? Not really, nor would I have expected it. But the fact that we DO get this never-before seen (or rarely seen?) footage makes it a surprisingly engaging watch.

There’s one point about halfway through the movie where there’s a sudden shift back to George and Andrew’s childhood and I was very confused as to why the director would make such a decision. But where that 3-4 minute sequence goes was pretty inspiring (if not a tad overdramatic) and once it got to where it was going, I practically started crying. What can I say, nostalgia is a powerful thing.

The 80s were a special time for me. I kinda “partied pretty hardy” for a lot of that decade, and I really loved the Music. In fact, I would say, certainly for me, that it was the last great decade for music. The styles present during that period were danged awesome. So, yea, I’ll definitely watch this… and then hopefully, it’ll be released on BR so I can pick this up.

Wham's version of "Last Christmas" is probably the most annoying Christmas song I have ever heard...and yet, radio stations keep playing it at least very 30 minutes during the holiday season. That's one reason why I started buying Christmas CDs by my fave artists, so I could listen to what i wanted and avoid the pain of Wham!

I’m not a fan of Wham! but I love that song. It’s so catchy I can’t help but sing along to it. In private. I don’t want to inflict my bad singing on anyone.

Many years ago, I was a bank manager in a branch where the MUZAK went on the fritz and played Paul McCartney's SIMPLY HAVING A WONDERFUL CHRISTMAS TIME. on a straight loop for 5 hours... You never recover from something like that...I hate ALL Christmas music now...

This doc was a fun trip down memory lane...

And no one thought to shut off the music after the third or fourth time through? That would have been my solution, just have no music until they were able to fix it.

Personally, I love most Christmas music; its just when the stations play the same ten songs or so, every hour and a half, that rubs me the wrong way.

I agree, mostly... except for "Little Drummer Boy..." I may hate all versions. Ritchie Petrie's version being the most teeth-vibrating...

Agreed. That's why years ago I made a mix tape of different Christmas tunes. It was called "I've Got a Boner For Christmas" (named after the Nerf Herder song).
