OK, I am either on to something, or am spending way too much time thinking about movies.
I am currently in my Horror-thon, and am working my way through the ups and downs of the Friday the 13th series. I started to compare it to another favorite franchise: STAR TREK. Friday the 13th (1980) / Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) The first one, the one that doesn't match the rest in tone or music, etc the look, the sound, the style - doesn't match the rest of the series. Some love it’s purity, others prefer the series that (re)started after this one. Friday the 13th Part 2 1981 / Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982) The reset. A new look and fresh approach to the material Friday the 13th Part III 1982 / Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984) The third one. Basically a retread of the second one. Nothing all that new - more of the same Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter 1984 / Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986) And here we go: this one rocks! Fun, entertaining, awesome movie ! Friday the 13th: A New Beginning 1985 / Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989) WHAT THE HELL WAS THIS MESS ?? Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives 1986 / Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991) YES! Back on track - the best one since the earlier, even-numbered ones ! Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood 1988 / Star Trek Generations (1994) the New blood / Next Generation kinda meh. Not terrible, not great the 4 Kane Hodder / Next Generation movies. Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan 1989 / Star Trek: First Contact (1996) this is the only one I cannot find a correlation. Most of the action takes place trapped on a ship? Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday 1993 / Star Trek: Insurrection (1998) Everyone seems to agree to hate this one Jason X 2002 / Star Trek: Nemesis (2002) the Tenth one. A bit of a gap between 9th and 10th – feels like the studio is desperate to hold on to a franchise on its way out. So many hate this one, the "franchise killer" The failure of this one caused a six year gap and a reboot of the whole franchise. Friday the 13th (2009) / Star Trek (2009) the 2009 Reboot! Polarizes the fanbase: some love it, others hate it |
