Default The RoboCop 2 Appreciation Thread

Such a terrific sequel.

The action sequences were thrilling, marvellous and well-directed. The stakes were higher, the production was on a grand-scale. The final battle was very climatic. Granted, it wasn't a masterpiece like the first movie but, hey, you cannot top that. You cannot top RoboCop 1987 anyway.

The criticism behind RoboCop being RoboCop and not "Alex Murphy" is beyond me. RoboCop is not Alex Murphy. He's a cyborg who uses half a brain of Alex Murphy and who convinces himself to be "Alex Murphy", exactly like Swamp Thing convinces himself to be Alec Holland, but he isn't. Fact is, RoboCop is not Alex Murphy, so I'm glad that he gave up "acting" like Alex Murphy at the beginning of the movie. STILL, despite this, RoboCop manages to be human throughout the movie. He also attempts suicide in order to save himself, and that's meaningful.

Peter Weller was great.

Just a brilliant sequel, and it was a commercial hit all around the world.

Is this thread a joke? It's definitely watchable, but the sequel is inferior in just about every possible way.

Yes, inferior to the first one.

Still, vastly better than RoboCop 3, the series, Prime Directives and RoboCop 2014.

I like RoboCop 3 more. It has the theme music at least.

That's not a very high standard.

Have always liked part 2, good action and for its time effects were good. When I was young use the end fight was my favorite part. A definite worth sequel, specially with Weller returning. Never watched the show, part three was ok. Nothing beats out the original. The remake also like alot, it has a good story, cast, and effects. Like that it didn't try to carbon copy the classic original. Remake did its own thing and it worked well.

It's overstuffed with ideas and lacks the sharp critique of its predecessor but it's still a lot of fun with great effects and action.

Tippet's terrific stop motion aside, it's a terrible film and an even worse sequel. Plus, they wasted Tom Noonan.

I remember seeing this in the theater and being so disappointed. Part of that I’m sure was the anticipation after seeing and loving Robocop (Again in the theater when I was 10). Looking back on it now I appreciate it’s satire and morbid humor more.

It's obviously no masterpiece like the original, but I like it a lot. It's weird and nihilistic and the finale is terrific.

I think this is because of the first movie. Alex Murphy is killed, then he is brought back as a cyborg. He has trouble remembering who he is, and still knows himself to be RoboCop. However in the end he realises who he truly is and at the very end of the film he acknowledges himself as Murphy.

I think that is what those critics focused on way too much.

What they didn't focus on much was RoboCop 2 where he is still very much Murphy and even keeps hounding his old family to the point his old wife is going crazy and he is asked to stop. Murphy (as RoboCop) has to face the realisation that he will never be able to be the old Alex Murphy anymore or be able to be with his old family. He is not liked for being Murphy, he is liked and wanted for being a cyborg, an OCP product, and so they try to wrongly fix this by filling his head with too many directives that he can't follow.

And yes, he does still act human through the film.

But if they didn't pay much attention to the movie then that's on them. A shame they can't enjoy it the way we can. But all the more for us.

Yeah, nothing can top the original. Still it did a good continuation.

RoboCop 3 - agreed.

The series - there are 2 animated series, there's an 80's one and a 1998 one. I did like the 80's one, but didn't like the 1998 series so much. So I agree for the 1998 animated show.

Prime Directives - I liked Prime Directives. RoboCable is probably my favorite character to come out of it, topping RoboCain IMO.

RoboCop 2014 - Yeah. Even RoboCop 3 is better than that, and that's saying something!

I've watched it many times over the years. It has it's fun moments, but it just doesn't have the heart and soul that makes the original such a trancendent movie. It even stops being a Robocop movie around the hour mark, where Robocop vanishes from the story for about 25 minutes for that ill judged subplot between the inefectual mayor of Detroit and the drug dealing 12 year old. People talk about the satire of the original and there are moments of it in the second one, but it feels a lot more cynical this time round and not in a particularly sharp way, either ; I don't think Frank Miller knows what pathos means.

This 100%. I enjoy 2 (own the Shout! Blu-ray). But correct, it’s harsher, more cynical and just mean at Times (the 1st could be at times too).

There’s a hint of heart and soul at the beginning. When Murphy’s wife comes to see him. Then it’s just dropped; like it never happened.

Still some badass moments. I can watch Robo’s intro for this film on a loop. Seeing that car blown to hell, and he just steps out, like nothing happened.

I missed the original theme too; don’t like the new theme. Was happy to hear it return in 3
