A lot of people think Phil Collins ruined Genesis.

The Peter Gabriel-led Genesis from the early years, and the Phil Collins-led Genesis of the 80s couldn't be more different.

I think the Gabriel era was the "truly epic" one (even including the time when Collins came on as the drummer). When Gabriel left, Collins moved from drums to lead singer, and took the band into a new light pop/soft rock direction.

I still like both versions, but I wouldn't be caught blasting some of the later stuff (like I Can't Dance) in public.

I had the chance to see Phil in concert with Genesis for the Trick of the Tail tour and again for a solo concert. Both were great. Part of what made the Trick of the Tail tour was Bill Bruford on drums.

I have most of the Genesis collection on vinyl and CD/SACD and also a large part of Phil's solo work on CD.
