Fingers crossed!

Would love Criterion to get this as well. Honestly, anyone but KINO.

Hmm 5.1 audio, that's weird. At least we know Paramount is licensing it out now. If this release is yucky then fingers crossed for whenever Criterion, Arrow, or Kino end up with it.

I would not rely on a single specification on that sheet... Shock don't ever change it...

Indeed. They used to advertise special features (when they used to actually have them) on the back covers and sometimes half of them weren't even on the actual disc...

It looks like they are not including the French track. That's a shame.

Polanski created two original audio tracks.

The English track has Polanski and the various celebrity cameo character actors (mostly English-speakers like Shelley Winters, Melvyn Douglas, but also the Russian Lila Kedrova) speaking in English. Isabelle Adjani and all the French supporting actors, meanwhile, are rather badly dubbed into English. I have no idea who dubbed Asjani, but I think the dubbing severely undermines her performance. Also, the dubbed voices are very particularly American, New York voices, jarring in a movie set in Paris.

Polanski also created a French track, in which we hear Adjani's own voice, and he speaks all his dialogue in French. The celebrity cameo actors are dubbed by French actors, but the vast majority of the supporting cast are French, and all seem to use their own voices.

I prefer the French track, to hear them in their own language, with subtitles - especially Adjani. Both tracks were on the Paramount DVD.

I'm fairly sure Polanski used the Italian filming method and had all the actors film their scenes in their native language, but it's astoundingly difficult to tell. He's careful to obscure mouths a lot when people speak, he clearly planned to create multiple dubs. Even when faces are visible, the alternate dialogue and ADR are skillfully done, so it's not a slam dunk to say which scenes were filmed in which language.

Polanski has talked about how movies in English are 1000x more commercial internationally. He shot all his movies in English after his career took off with Knife in the Water, no matter where they were set. His last three films have been in French only because they were aimed purely at the French domestic audience due to the baggage related to his private life. (His new film, An Officer and a Spy was intended to be in English, he spoke about this multiple times, but financial realities clearly forced him to film it in French in the end, likely at a much more limited budget.)

Polanski frequently created complicated alternate French vs English audio versions, as with Frantic, where Warner Bros confused the two tracks on the first pressing of their BD.

I’ve only seen the English version (which I love) I definitely noticed the dubbing on certain characters. I don’t think my old dvd had the French version but I could be wrong.

I'm truly not sure what language the vast majority of the film was shot in.

Most of the actors are French, but in certain scenes their mouths seem slightly closer to the English dialogue than the French.

That said, the sync on both languages is iffy.

I suspect very little, if any, of the audio is actual production audio.

Yes, it would be nice to hear Adjani's real voice, even speaking in English as she did in Zulawaski's Possession. But she's barely in The Tenant so it's never really bothered me.

The film definitely focuses on Polanski's character, all the others are undeniably secondary, but I think Adjani has more screen time than any other supporting actor. She's in a fair chunk of the film. Certainly the French-speaking actors in the film have far more screen time than the English-speaking ones.

Either way, the English track was how Polanski intended the film to be seen by English-speaking audiences, so I'm not complaining too much, more just pointing out an interesting fact, since many aren't aware of the French track at all.

Isn't she just in it at the start for five or ten minutes and at the end for a couple? I've seen it many times and I have the old Paramount DVD, but admittedly I haven't watched it for 3 or 4 years. My memory also isn't what it was sometimes... Getting old sucks!

Been quite a few years since I saw it too, but I could have sworn she was in a lot more of it than that. When I popped the DVD in the other day to check the audio on a few scenes, she was in many of the scenes I randomly stopped on. Course my computer might just have good taste.

Adjani and Polanski have several scenes throughout. If memory serves me, they go to the cafe together to get a coffee/cigarettes. Later Polanski moves into Adjani's apartment which he subsequently tears apart. Adjani is definitely supporting him, physically and psychologically, throughout the film. They make it very clear Adjani is attracted to Polanski but he's too paranoid to take advantage of that attraction.

Oof, that is truly hideous artwork.

Looks like it was created in photoshop in five minutes by someone who never saw the movie but just read a logline.

I mean I'm happy to get the film on disc, but yowza, what an ugly cover. The building in the background looks like a New York skyscraper, nothing like the Paris apartment building where the film is set.
