USA The Resurrected (1991) 4K UHD (Vinegar Syndrome)

Vinegar Syndrome will be releasing The Resurrected (aka Shatterbrain) (1991) on 4K UHD later this month. It was previously released on Blu-ray by Scream Factory.

Quote:
This special limited edition spot gloss slipcover (designed by Wes Benscoter) is limited to 5,000 units and is only available on our website and at select indie retailers. Absolutely no major retailers will be stocking them.

Private investigator John March is handed the most unusual case of his career when the beautiful Claire Ward turns up at his office asking for help. Her husband, the esteemed chemical engineer Charles Dexter Ward, has started dabbling in strange and secretive experiments, and has recently moved out of the marital home and into a remote and disused ancestral farmhouse to continue his activities in privacy. As these experiments take an ever more sinister turn, with reports of body parts being delivered to the property, Charles himself begins displaying increasingly erratic behavior, apparently taking on the personality of someone from centuries ago. With Charles eventually committed to a psychiatric facility for evaluation, leaving John and Claire free to investigate the property, the nightmare has only just begun…

Taking its cue from the success of Stuart Gordon’s similarly H.P. Lovecraft-inspired Re-Animator (1985), director Dan O’Bannon’s (The Return of the Living Dead) THE RESURRECTED sought to further mine the works of Lovecraft with this thrilling take on his novella The Case of Charles Dexter Ward. Starring John Terry (TV's Lost, The Living Daylights), Chris Sarandon (Fright Night, Child’s Play), Jane Sibbett (TV’s Friends), and Robert Romanus (Fast Times at Ridgemont High), and featuring some truly memorable and horrific prosthetic creature FX, Vinegar Syndrome is thrilled to breathe new life into this unjustly overlooked early 90s horror outing, which claws its way up from the subterranean lab newly restored in 4K from its original camera negative and loaded with a wealth of new and archival bonus features.

directed by: Dan O'Bannon
starring: John Terry, Jane Sibbett, Chris Sarandon, Robert Romanus
1991 / 105 min / 1.85:1 / English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Stereo

I remember reading about it in Fangoria, and then renting the VHS. I watched it again a few years ago.

I'm curious to learn more about the story behind finding the original camera negatives. I bought the Shout Blu-ray last year and remember reading about how they film elements they had to work with weren't ideal, especially for certain scenes/portions of the film. Because of that, I figured it was safe to go ahead and purchase since a 4K seemed unlikely This is an upgrade I'm both stoked and annoyed to get, if that makes any sense

When I found the BD on sale I thought: Dan O'Bannon does Lovecraft, How could I go wrong?

Turned out to be one of the best Lovecraft movies I had ever seen.

I don't know how this one slipped completely under my radar until I read up on it during the last Hamilton Book drop, and by the time I wanted to order it, it was gone. It turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Looking forward to seeing it for the first time in 4K.

Not familiar with this movie, definitely interested. And really like the Wes Benscoter slipcover, one of my favorite illustrators doing work for labels at the moment, I think his stuff is always a blast to look at. He just has a great style, feels like classic-era horror magazine art. I had recently ordered his excellent From Beyond slip redesign, as well as The Ghost Dance. I’ll be picking this up for sure.

No barring on the movie at hand, but I've met Chris Sarandon before and he's a super nice guy.

Maybe 7-8 years ago I was working at an A/V shop in the same town he lived in, and he walked in one day because he needed some work done. I didn't say anything at the time, but later was at his house and got to briefly say I was a fan of his.

I also met Christopher Plummer years before he passed, and resisted the urge to say that his room was alive with the sound of music after fixing his stereo.

I didn't know Shout's Blu-ray was sourced from a less than ideal element. Or maybe I just forgot lol, in any case, this new piece of info (for me) is bumping up my enthusiasm for the double dip a bit. I don't even know if I ever saw this movie before; nothing about it jogs my memory tbh. 1991 was a transition year for me...I wasn't really watching a ton of movies while I was prepping for HS graduation. Body horror really isn't my bag. I do like some stuff.

Recently saw this for the first time. Wild that it never got a cinema release, because this film is superior stuff. A terrifically engaging bit of filmmaking, that's wonderfully executed. For horror fans, it's surely a safe blind buy.

I first saw this on Netflix when they had just started streaming. Their horror selection was good at the time. Not a Netflix original in sight!

This is the horror movie we're looking for when we feel that we've seen it all. It's so fun. The Case of Charles Dexter Ward also seems to go untalked about among Lovecraft's stories, at least in my experience.

I would love a Lovecraft anthology film to be made instead of attempts to stretch Mountains of Madness etc into a feature length job. Give me the Dunwich Horror!

Some very nice Benscoter art on this one. Haven't seen the movie itself yet, but judging by the trailer I'll definitely pick it up next sale.

It gets mentioned a lot by Lovecraft fans on the internet. 'The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath' which I love does not get mentioned much.

I pretty sure there is a radio adaption of Dunwich Horror. Masters of Horror had at least one Lovecraft adaption.

I think I have that on vinyl! I also have an audio file of the Rats in the Walls, which would be amazing if put on the big screen in a comprehensive way. Actually, I could see Rats being a feature length picture.

It’s a good movie (though admittedly on the cheaper side). If anyone is interested, I’d strongly recommend reading the Lovecraft story it’s based on: The Case of Charles Dexter Ward. To this day, it’s still one of my favorite horror novels and, in my opinion, Lovecraft’s best work.

The Resurrected is a solid adaptation, but it can’t fully capture the depth and atmosphere of the original story. Back in the ’60s, Roger Corman and Vincent Price did their own version titled The Haunted Palace, which I’d say is just as enjoyable as The Resurrected.

But seriously, start with the book. You’ll thank me later. :P

I'll see if I can dig up where I read that. I realize that I might be mixing impressions from the review on this site with the knowledge that there were disputes about which cut(s) to use, as mentioned above.

Anyway, I love so many things about this movie: the early 90s look & feel; Lovecraft lore & mythos; and a certain crisp New England coldness in the outdoor scenes that make this a nice segue into my autumn horror rotation. (Also, while it qualifies as a kind of "body horror," it's definitely still in the normal realm of horror tropes and not in the vein of Cronenberg body horror.)

From the review here at blu-ray.com:

The AVC encoded image (1.85:1 aspect ratio) presentation attempts to pull "The Resurrected" out of a history of problematic home video releases. The "New 2K scan of the interpositive" doesn't deliver much fine detail when it comes to the gruesome events of the movie, retaining softness and a slightly filtered look at times. Even close-ups struggle to remain appealing, with select scenes picking up on make-up achievements and performance choices. Colors are tastefully refreshed, staying in the genre with heavy reds and moonlit blues, while more traditional primaries are represented in costuming choices. Delineation holds together, preserving frame information, and the source isn't hit with overt damage.
