Sounds like a good deal. Will this addon have better playback than that of the A1?

Keep in mind this is the smaller remote, not the really slick Harmony one that runs for $120.

So, not only is it an external player, will cost $199 (making it the same price as a PS3), but will NOT have HDMI as well.

I'll pass, thanks. Why go for this when you can get more movies, more storage, capability of playing games on next gen media, and not worry about the whole no HDMI issue with a PS3 that has a drive built-in?

Again where is the outcry from those people who indeed think the PS3 is overpriced? Where?

Good news, very good price. I was hoping for a last minute HDMI announcement so the audio wouldn't be crippled.

still likely to buy it eventually.

Kong would make a great demo disc, personally I thought it was underwhelming but in the theater it looked and sounded fantastic, same with the DVD version. Naomi Watt's was excellent and the saving grace of the movie.

Combo price is over $500 though to watch movies in HD (CORE 360 of $299 doesn't include a HD cable).

Still wish I could have paid $100 extra for my 360 to have it included from the beginning.

The 360 fanboys are all going on about the price, on other forums, they're kind of missing the point though - if you don't already own an Xbox360 the price is only just short of the top end PS3 and higher than the (now HMDI equipped) 20Gb PS3.

I didn't realise MS were dishing out blinkers with every purchase...

However, this does present blu-ray with a problem in Europe; there will be no "cheap" way into blu-ray until March next year when the PS3 launches. Now, fair enough there aren't that many movies to buy on HD-DVD over here, but it does give Toshiba and MS a genuine head start. There are over a million xbox360's in Europe, I wonder how many owners will pick up the add on?

As for the Kong DVD? Well, I'm not surprised they have to give it away...

And Peter Jackson signing up with Microsoft? I find it difficult to care, he's living off the glory from LotR - with his first movie since then, the aforementioned Kong, a flop. Next he wants to remake the Dam Busters! Can't this guy come up with something new? But maybe that's why he fits so well at MS, they've made a living out of ripping off others' ideas...

I just hope this Peter Jackson/MS affair won't affect any LOTR on Blu-ray plans.

Shouldn't do, it's a studio thing, not his to decide. It would be a coup though, but one we hope doesn't happen!

Back to the add-on itself, does anyone know what audio formats it supports? The PS3 has dolby and dts logos on it, but I've not seen any on the 360 or the add-on, anyone know?

No HDMI + No Analog Outputs = No Sale.

(Unless I can find it for dirt cheap)

Yes I really don't see the big deal about this addon. It's way too stripped down for any enthusiast to care unless you just want this as a stopgap.

no lossless audio, no HDMI, it really is only a stopgap. $199 is a good price, but I don't know at this point.. I thought I'd buy it if it was under $200 but more and more I'm thinking it isn't worth it.

Stopgaps. Exactly right.

That all these game consoles really are, for both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD, although I expect the PS3 to be a better and more reliable Blu-Ray player than I expect this Toshiba made add-on to be for the 360.
