Default Directv & Surround Sound?

Are you guys as bummed as I am over the lack of 5.1 coming over Sat.TV. I put a lot of money into building a 5.1 system and it does a great job with DVD and BRD but the fact is that TV is where I spend most of my time. Back when I got over- the- air TV there was plenty of of 5.1 available from network shows. So I got a Sat HD system from DiricTV and I find that only about 1 or 2 percent is stereo or 5.1.

Hell, these people are evening stripping the 5.1 out of network shows that advertise that they are broadcasting in 5.1 on screen.WTF? I have the HDTV channel option for which I pay big bucks every month forever and you would think that this stuff would have high quality sound to match their high quality PK, but noooooo! I estimate 1 HD movie in 50 has 5.1.

Any informed wisdom on this situation out there?

Buy the way-- how does HDTV @1080I compare to BRD PQ? My TV PQ is marginally better than BRD PQ. Is this normal?

Thanks in advance RBC

Well its a few days later and big woops, my bad, the situation with DiricTV isn't at all what I thought it was. I was basing my calculation on 5.1 sound content on the codes displayed by DTV as described in their op manual. It turns out that there is more than way they indicate 5.1 content and somtimes 5.1 is prescent without notification, particulary on HD programing.

thanks to those who put me on the right trail.

I don't have an issue with Dish. I get 5.1 on almost all HD channels (so long as the show provides it) and network shows that are running 5.1.

Granted, I don't use it all the time because I'm not switching through my receiver, but I use it especially when I'm watching something on Monsters HD or certain other shows on the HD channels.

Get plenty of DD 5.1 through my HD receiver for DirecTV. I have all 6 Star Wars films saved on my HD-DVR and they have GREAT DD 5.1 surround sound - very directional and robust. Tiding me over until a Blu-Ray release.

Other programs all come through in DD.

No, that's not at all normal. BD (most discs anyway) should look far superior to anything coming over sat. TV. Some connection, or setting, is wrong.

I've got my HR20-700 set to Dolby Digital and get very nice surround sound on the broadcasts that are truely HD.

Now, if you are watching TBS that is another story. Their shows are marked as HD in the guide but they are definitely not HD shows (Friends, Raymond, etc). The picture quality is pathetic on that channel as well because it is stretched at the source. I will never watch another show on TBS and have removed it from my list as well.
