Quote:
Before he created Westworld and Jurassic Park, Michael Crichton first blurred the line between science fiction and science fact with his breakout success The Andromeda Strain. Two years after the novel’s publication, Robert Wise (The Haunting) directed the film adaptation, a nail-biting blend of clinically-realised docudrama and astonishing sci-fi visuals that ushered in a new subgenre: the “killer virus” biological thriller.

A government satellite crashes outside a small town in New Mexico – and within minutes, every inhabitant of the town is dead, except for a crying baby and an elderly derelict. The satellite and the two survivors are sent to Wildfire, a top-secret underground laboratory equipped with a nuclear self-destruct mechanism to prevent the spread of infection in case of an outbreak. Realising that the satellite brought back a lethal organism from another world, a team of government scientists race against the clock to understand the extraterrestrial virus – codenamed “Andromeda” – before it can wipe out all life on the planet.

Aided by innovative visual effects by Douglas Trumbull (2001: A Space Odyssey; Silent Running) and an unforgettable avant-garde electronic music score by Gil Mellé (The Sentinel), Wise’s suspense classic still haunts to this day, and is presented here in a stunning 4K restoration from the original negative.

Andromeda Strain is one of those "comfort" films for me. Something I can pop in anytime and always enjoy. I love watching the events in the film unfold and it should be even more enjoyable in 4K.

I watched my DVD copy a couple months ago and it looked fantastic upscaled on my equipment. I kept being amazed about how great it looked. I'm not going to even need to upgrade this movie.

Now that I see it coming I'm not going to be able to resist.

The same and off to pre-order from Arrow after finishing this post. Arrow has May 13th for the release date. I originally viewed this at an outdoor (Drive-In) Cinema in 1971 when I was just a lad. It was on a double-bill with Colossus: The Forbin Project which is also a favorite of mine.

Never got the Arrow Blu because I had a feeling. The Jason titles got the attention, but I anticipated this one more. The Universal Blu I have is a rather dated transfer, so it would be nice to see! I actually put this on par with Jurassic Park at the top as far as Crichton adaptions go.

Oh Hells yaaaass! Finally. An excellent Crichton craftwork. I figured we we going to see this LE uhd last year already after Arrow had teased it. Better late than never. Perfect Saturday afternoon fodder. I'm all in for this one. It's going to look fantastic in 4k with hdr, and I hope it winds up with an FiM encode. This stands a very good chance of being the definitive release of the title.

Ordered!!

One of my favorite films ever, and perhaps one of the most scientifically accurate.

According to Popular Mechanics, rankings of the top scientifically quantifiable and technically accurate films:

1) Jurassic Park (actually happened)
2) Moonfall
3) Planet of the Apes (happening now)
4) Contact
5) The Core
6) San Andreas (very nearly happened)
7) The Swarm
8) The Day After Tomorrow
9) Altered States (tried it myself)
10) The Andromeda Strain

That's respectable.

Oh yes, excellent both from an entertainment factor and from an accuracy factor. It is also remarkably faithful to the novel, both provide their own means of enjoyment. The novel I guess is more of a deep dive that the movie can't do (not that it isn't taking its time, but a novel is almost always more information dense than a movie), and the movie gives a unique visual element of the story to compliment the novel. I really enjoy both.

I was tempted to get this Arrow BD many years ago, very glad I didn't. I absolutely love this film and am all over this.

I am saddened that The Food of the Gods didn't make the cut.

Been waiting for this for a long time, one of the movies I have always wanted in 4K. Once I saw the Blu come out a few years back, I knew a 4K was eventually coming, so I waited. And now the 4K has arrived.
