LG Announces Sale of First 8K OLED TV - Blu-ray Forum

I am glad to see that LG is going to release this year a native 8K OLED display that is 88 inches and has HDMI 2.1. However in theory it well not be until around the year 2026 before we see a 8K optical disc format launch (if every). While 8K download and streaming might also occur around the year 2026, perhaps in 3 or 4 years Netflix and VUDU might start offering 8K streaming early.

Hopefully some native 8K ceiling mounted projectors and short throw table mounted projectors will be released in the future. Some consumers like 1080P Blu-ray 3D and projectors are the only technology left that supports 3D (One of the reasons is because DLP projectors are reference quality when it comes to 3D).

The $29,999 price for a LG 88 inch 8K OLED screen is very good. It costs over $250,000 for a high-end DLP 8K projector.

Prices for 8K OLED screens and 8K projectors well slowly start to fall over the years as demand and QTY increase.

I'd love to be able to see this marvel in person, but there won't be one displayed within 100 miles, maybe further, of where I live.

By Q1 2020 we'll have the first consumer 8K camera so enthusiasts can create their own 8K HDR content.

We'll also have Youtube in 8K and LG will supply the external decoder box at no charge to OLED88Z9PUA owners at no charge that will work with Youtube and other 8K content.

That is great news that consumers will be able to record home made movies in 8K and upload them on YouTube in true 8K. However in the ideal world IMAX theaters and Dolby Cinema theaters need to upgrade to dual 8K DLP projectors so that movie studios can release movies in commercial movie theaters in true native 8K quality. Then those movies can be placed on 8K optical disks, 8K download, or 8K streaming several months later for the consumer.

There is a possibility that Netflix and maybe VUDU might start offering native 8K movies in 2023+. Netflix already uses 8K digital cameras but currently only streams in 4K Ultra HD.

There are some areas of the USA in rural areas that still only offer around 14Mbps download speed which is not fast enough for 4K streaming. Around 16Mbps minimum is needed for low bit rate 4K streaming as long as no one else in the house is using the Internet. More and more rural areas in America including Alaska are getting 1,000Mbps fiber upgrades, but some places might have to wait a few more years.

Today is a really big day at Value Electronics. Really big has two meanings, 1st is the advancements in display technology and 2nd is the huge screen size of LG's new 88" 8K OLED TV.

We are the first retailer in America to have this TV on display and we've also shipped all of our clients orders. Hope to see many Blu-ray.com members and readers stop by our showroom to see this stunning 8K OLED TV on display in our showroom!

LG says technically it's possible to mount the display on the wall, but it's not a very elegant solution. Really. Here's an idea LG. Make the display available without the stand and ready out the box to be mounted on the wall if a customer so desires. As if someone spending this type of money on a display is not going to pair it with a real sound system in addition to wanting the display to blend in with the current aestethic of their room. Then again, what do I know. It's all about being elegant evidently. It's a statement piece.

Well my wallet unfortunately will not let me keep up with this kind of technology. Even though I would love to have the latest & greatest I'm pretty much where I'll always be. The upgrade to 4K has served me well and I'm getting to old anyways lol. Even 3-5 years down the roadI don't see myself being able to afford anything than my little 4K but growing collection. Maybe I'll try the lottery route
