They've released S1 in 4K and will be doing S8 alongside the regular Blu-ray release, but it's looking doubtful as to whether the rest will end up on 4K disc. The problem with this series is not so much the remastering but that it's been re-released so many times already on Blu that even hardcore fans are swerving the 4K.

I really don't understand these companies releasing catalogue titles 1 season at a time. |

I dunno either, but why it is gloom and doom around here for 4K and physical media now. It's like suddenly (this month) everybody's ringing the death knell around here. I get that there is evidence that could possibly support that, but it's like people have already given up and thrown in the towel. A why bother attitude. And with an attitude like that, we're just hastening the demise even quicker. Whether there was one, to begin with, or not. It's just saddening. Sorry for the mini-rant/thought spewage.

There is a massive surplus of GOT disc releases that remain unsold, due to the various releases of each season, multi-season packs, collector's editions, limited edition retailer exclusives, etc. and the physical retailers giving the boot to physical media is only making things worse, as much of that surplus is being relegated to online sales or held over for super sales like Black Friday or the regular HBO sales. That being said, I doubt the 4K remasters sold well enough to push for the entire series to be made available in the near future, but I would not discount a full release several years from now, when GOT mania has died down, 4K disc sales are more normalized with the PS5 and next-gen Xbox, and the surplus of GOT releases has been significantly reduced by sales attrition.

And I don't think 4k releases will stop in the near future. Major films will still get a 4k release, even Disney movies. I just doubt there will be any more catalogue titles for Disney. As for GoT, I don't think they'll release 2-7 on 4k, but not because the format is dying. |
