When I watch BD's with my father, and I'm waiting for the disc to load on his BDP-S301, I wonder to myself why he spent $450 (Sam's Club) on a BD players when he could've spent $50 less on a PS3 that...
1) Decodes TrueHD, and hopefully soon DTS HD MA 2) Was the one of the first BD players to have HDMI v1.3 3) Doesn't take forever to load a BD 4) Does more than just plays movie 5) Was the first BD player to be Profile 1.1 (possibly 2.0) equipped (whether you care or not) 6) Among other reasons, reasons #1 and #5 make it the most future-proof player out there I'm not here to bash anybody who watches their BD's on something other than the PS3, but wondering what percentage of BD owner's own a PS3. The one player I can understand is the Elite, but with that you'd have to have one bad ass TV. So what do you watch your's on? Last edited by cajmoyper; 01-17-2008 at 06:58 PM. |

PS3 for me and couldn't be more happier. I only use it for movies and downloadable games/content. I would probably say a majority of those who post on here either have a PS3 for a main player or at least one as a secondary player.

Bought PS3 mostly for gaming but no it is used mostly for BD. Best $600 I spent in along time even though many of my friends call me an idiot for it.

I have the PS3 now. I originally had (well, still have technically, though I will most likely get rid of it) a Samsung BD-P1200 player. I won't go into my rant about that particular player (go check the review thread for that player for info on the issues with it). I had gotten it for free as an award, so it's not like the machine, itself, cost me anything.
But when I got frustrated with it, from most everything I had heard, the PS3 is the most solid, reliable, future-proof Blu-Ray player on the market. While many other stand alones work a lot better than the Samsung one that I got, I really cannot recommend any of them over the PS3. Granted, some other players can decode certain types of audio that the PS3 can't, which means in some cases you won't be getting as high of a quality of audio depending on the types available for any particular release. And the PS3 doesn't seem to be compatible with any univeral remotes. But, IMO the remote thing isn't THAT big of an issue, and most audio that the PS3 can play will still be far superior to what you find on regular DVDs anyway. It's a small trade off (IMO) for the advantages that the PS3 offers, even to non-gamers. People are better off using this for now, and then maybe later on, when newer stand-alones are lower in price have a more standardized, finalized features/upgrades, etc, then get just a stand alone player. IMO the PS3 is both Blu-Rays biggest strength and greatest weakness. If it wasn't for the PS3, there's a good change Blu-Ray wouldn't be winning the format war. But, the fact that the PS3, which essentially is primarily a game system with movie playback as a secondary function, is able to play these movies in a much more efficient manner than what most (if not all) machines that are created soley for the movie-playback purpose could give off a bad impression to average people looking into going Hi-Def with their movies. For the record, I hope Blu-Ray gains as much ground as possible and eventually replaces DVD, but I do worry if the PS3 factor, which has gotten it to wear it is now, could also be the aspect that hurts it as well. I hope time proves me wrong on this one. |

I'd say 80 - 90% of the users on this forum are PS3 owners. We've done several polls here over the past few months and it always turns up with PS3 way way way in the lead.
