Default Are people who still BUY DVDs wasting their money?

I would assume that most people know about Blu-ray/HD DVD. They may not be interested in the two formats or may not be willing to buy into them at this point, but people are still aware of their existence and the fact that one of them will eventually replace DVD as the main format.

The day I heard about Blu-ray/HD DVD coming out I decided i was not going to buy any more DVDs. IMO it was not worth the price tag for something that would soon be replaced. I knew I would buy one of those formats sooner or later and I basically just rented movies until I bought my PS3.

I was at Best Buy, Circuit City, and Walmart (never going to Walmart again, I felt so dirty after) and I noticed that DVDs are still selling like crazy. People walking around looking at DVDs would just skip through the 5 rows of Blu as if they contained VHS or something. No one even paused to look at this new rising format (no one looked at HD DVD either).

Are people just in denial about Blu-ray/HD DVD? Do they think all this is going away? I mean you would think they learned their lesson after rebuying their VHSs on DVD, which face it, by now most people have re-bought them.

I understand why people would not jump into one format or the other at this point, but I dont understand why people would keep building a collection that would soon be obsolete. IMO opinion, right now all anyone should do is rent DVDs or buy Blu-rays. Buying DVDs is just a waste of money IMO. What do you think?

I wouldn't say DVDs will be completely obsolete since all HD players are backwards compatible with DVD. You won't have to rebuy your movies if you don't want to. It is not the same as when VHS went out.

Just my $.02

Yes and No. The bad movies you may not want again, but anything good is worth re-buying for the quality increase. Spending 14.99 on a new DVD movie doesn't make sense to me.

I definitely hear ya. I don't buy DVDs anymore. But for the SD crowd who don't plan on going HD for quite some time I think buying DVDs is still ok.

Depends on what movies you buy too. Will they ever make blu-ray editions of Arch Hall's 'The Sadist' or the collected works of Ray Dennis Steckler or Dorish Wishman? Will anyone care when they do? It's great to be a movie fan right now because all the confusion and indifference is driving down SD prices something fierce.

I'm encouraged that some exploitation titles like Sonny Chiba and Sister Streetfighter movies are coming to Blu, but there is still a whole world of cinema out there that either will never go Blu, or at least won't for a long long time.

DVD's will continue to look just as good as they ever did. Even better, with upconverting.

As far as my own movie-buying goes though, I am with the OP - I decided a few months ago to not buy any more DVD's and started buying BD's, even though I didn't even have an HDTV or a BD player yet.

Most people aren't fanatics like us though.

This is the dilemma that I face all the time. I've been waiting for the Da Vinci Code to come out for ever (since it was announced for Nov '06 then canceled). I saw a used copy for $3 dollars so I picked it up. Over the years, I learned what was a good price range to buy DVDs at. I started getting most of the movies I wanted used to help spread the money around.

Now that I've had blu-ray for just over a year, I haven't bought things like the Twin Peaks boxset or the Flight of the Conchords DVD that just came out. And the sad truth is that these shows might not make it to blu-ray for a long time..if ever.

THe only Dvd's I buy still are the Criterion Collection. They have not gone next gen yet, and I feel their dvd's which all are from high def transfers look good enough upscaled on the ps3.

I have slowed way down in my DVD purchases. As a matter of fact, I haven't bought any in months. I will be buying Newhart season one when it comes out next year, and a few must haves, that may never come out on any HD format.

This sort of situation puts one in a quandry. What about titles that only barely came to DVD or have even gone out of print and have not been replaced? Two of my faves, SLEUTH and SEVEN PERCENT SOLUTION, I have in laserdisc; but they went out of print in DVD before I could replace my laserdiscs. Other titles of movies have never made it to DVD. I expect that replacement/new Blu's could be a *long time* in coming.

I've been watching Smallville 1-6, and only just started watching the Blu-ray Season 6 over the weekend. Now, I can see the difference between it and the previous seasons, but not enough to knock my socks off consistently. Not for the significant price difference that the Blu version was over the regular.

I have decided that while I will, and have been, replacing many SD movies with their Blu equivalents*, I'm just not seeing enough of an improvement to replace any TV series with Blu. I'll buy the new Blu TV titles that come out that I don't have in SD; but otherwise, it ain't worth it. I think my TV and the upconverting function of my Sony Blu-ray player make the biggest improvement in the whole scheme of things.

* When there's a sale

-Greg

since i love anime most anime companies have not even decided which HD format they should support so i buy the dvds anyways until they all have made up their minds. I wish there was more anime on Blu-Ray. I mean sure there is more anime on Blu-Ray then Hd-Dvd but I would like to get rid of some of my older anime dvds i dont want anymore and get them in HD

NO RENT and NO BUY on Movies. I only buy DVD that are: CSI:, CSI: NY, and CSI: Miami. I don't want to watch 480p movies if I have seen many movies in 1080p, it make me feel yuck if I watch movie on DVD. I haven't bought alot of DVD and yet to get CSI: series of this year, I am delaying my purchase on CSI: until 2008 cuz I am focus on my own Blu-ray Biltz into my collection as more increase you can see Warner Bros over last few weeks and next several weeks to Christmas, most titles will be Warner Bros on Blu.

Default Buying DVDs

I have already shifted my primary focus to promoting/purchasing/supporting Blu-Ray as a whole, but I am still willing to dedicate certain dollar amounts to respective DVD titles (i.e., Independent Films, Foreign Films, etc.)

Depends on what you're buying. Some titles, especially TV, won't see as much benefit with Blu. If someone is rushing out to buy Pirates 3 on DVD, then yeah, that is a waste of money, IMO.

Yeah, I don't buy anymore DVDs except TV shows. Like the Twin Peaks set that just came out or the last season of Seinfeld. I don't think we'll be seeing a lot of TV on BDs any time soon. Even when DVDs are around $3, I can't bring myself to purchase one. I have a pretty huge collection of DVDs, but I am slowly getting rid of them. I plan on NetFlix'ing everything I want to see until this whole format war blows over. The only BD I HAD to have was NIN:BYIT. Nothing else has come out that has been worth the $30 price tag for me.

Some movies are just not made for blu-ray like some of Quentin Tarantino's films use a different film and wouldn't make a difference on blu
