Default One of my clients just went HD-DVD :(

I'm an insurance agent and one of my clients just called me up to see if his new plasma and high-def dvd player would be covered. Of course, the first thing I asked him was if that was a blu-ray player.

He explained that he went with HD-DVD because of the cost of the player and more for the upconverting capabilities. He also mentioned the 5 free movies deal.

I thought about chastising him about his purchase, but hey, the customer's always right. He also said he wasn't going to be paying $30 per movie anyways and that his old dvd's look great on the player.

It wasn't worth losing 2 autos and a homeowners policy by arguing with him. Have I betrayed my blu brothers?

No its his own fault for being a dumbass and buying a player that hardly anyone releases movies for.
I saw the Q1 release for paramount over at the HDDVD forums and its pathetic. I think it was about 6 movies total not counting the jack ryan collection. He will be sorry eventually. And whats with people thinking that blu ray players dont upconvert, a blu player will do just as well as an hddvd player will.
Here is the list:
Summary:
1/8 - Zodiac
2/26 - Beowulf
3/4 - Into the Wild, Things we lost in the Fire
3/11 - Bee Movie
Q1 - The Jack Ryan Collection, The Kite Runner

Jack Ryan Collection Includes:
The Hunt for Red October
Clear and Present Danger
Patriot Games
The Sum of all Fears

They have nothing to look forward to except the jack ryan collection. Thats just sad.

No, you haven't betrayed anyone.

This is your job we're talking about here. Keeping it and not doing anything to screw it up is much more important than arguing with someone about their movie format choice.

Blu-Ray is a movie format, not a cult (and if anyone is treating it like a cult, then they REALLY need to get their priorities straight).

next time he is in your office, make sure you have all the info about Blu there.
It doesn't matter though. He will be forced to see the error of his ways now that Blu has 85% of the sales, and 70%+ of the market.
There is no way HD DVD will even survive. They will have to get Blu-ray or live with inferior/out-of-date/dead technology.

No. Your client will soon realize his or her stupidity then there are no more hd-dvd discs being made nor any players. If he is satisfied with upconverting, then don't cast your pearls before swine.

thy betrayal calls for the ultimate punishment: Me pulling my tongue at you

but seriously, don't worry, in a few months when hd-dvd is to be found in museums only, he will turn around and realize his foolish mistakes. When that happens it will be time for you to give him the ultimate punishment ...

It won't be obsolete for him since he wants to use it as an upconverting player mainly. Toshiba takes a loss on player sales and makes nothing on movie sales with this guy.

You should stalk him until he comes around to your line of thinking.

Chicks dig it, and so do some guys.

What a missed opportunity to make him feel like more then a policy to you!!

He could have taken your recommendation to heart and you could have used that for future credibility.

make sure you have a bigger collection of Blu than him, than ask him how his collection is coming now that WB is Blu exclusive and tell him how much better your collection is

You could have explained that it probably isn't worth it to insure the HD DVD player because in the event that he lost it, he would not be able to replace it with an HD DVD player and he would only get the depreciated value of it, $20 for a used DVD player.

ha ha ha No But I don't get why people always comment that Blu's cost so much. I know they do in store, but I always use Amazon and between their general good prices and occasional BOGO I've never paid more than $19.99 and I think the average price I end up paying is around $15.

From one insurance person to another:

You should have called him in for a Personal Risk Review for a face to face intervention and then if he still didn't go blu, call the underwriters and have them XL the accounts effective immediately.

You don't need that crud in your life!

Thats what I was thinking, I was even considering myself purchasing an HD-DVD player for $130 and using it as an upconverting dvd player and just selling those free hd-dvd's to make up the cost. Maybe we should all buy those cheap Toshibas, they lose money with the player in hopes of the consmuer buying the hd-dvd's to make their profit, but if the players sell and the discs dont they lose lots of money.

No, you did not betray anyone, and he is not “stupid” or a “dumbass” for purchasing a HD DVD player. Not everyone knows much about Blu-ray and HD DVD, therefore, price plays a great role, and not everyone can afford a $400 player.

The correct response would have been, "Your new plasma is covered but the HD-DVD player has no intrinsic value and is therefore uninsurable."
