Quote:
Val Kilmer and Carrie-Anne Moss headline the sci-fi adventure Red Planet, an exciting glimpse into a future where humankind’s last hope for survival rests on escaping the bounds of Earth and colonising the cosmos. In the not-so-distant future, the ecological crisis on Earth has taken a turn for the worse, and humanity’s only hope may lie in seeking refuge on neighbouring Mars. After years of unmanned missions to terraform the planet, a crew of astronauts aboard Mars-1 are finally sent to establish Earth’s first Martian colony. But a giant solar flare sends their landing module crash-landing on the planet, leaving our pioneers stranded in a harsh crimson wasteland. As the crew battle the elements and rising inner tensions, they soon discover that Mars’ newly formed atmosphere has had unexpected and terrifying consequences. With a stellar supporting cast including Tom Sizemore and Terence Stamp and cinematography by Peter Suschitzky (The Empire Strikes Back), Red Planet is an out-of-this-world spectacle presented here in stunning 4K Ultra HD.

Great news! This movie might not be in the top sci-fi movies, but I really like it!

Yeah, it was one of those weird Armageddon/Deep Impact, Tombstone/Wyatt Earp movie marketing doppelgangers that come along every once in a while.

I have the memory of liking this not quite as much as the other 2000 Mars movie but I also feel as though I can make no distinction of the two, apart from De Palma directing Mission to Mars.

Volcano and Dantes Peak as well. These are often given as examples of just “two similar ideas coming about simultaneously by happenstance”, but it was so prevalent in the 90s I honestly think it was just rival studios catching wind of and copying each others projects in order to compete at the box office.

Its definitely more what you think and less just coincidence. Really seemed to kick in during the late '80s (Abyss/Leviathan/Deepstar Six) and early 90s (Patrick Bergin Robin Hood which ended up on TV was competing with Costner's Prince of Thieves) also.

Saw it in the theater and loved it! I never even owned the blu-ray, so its been many years since I've seen it.

Now, if only Arrow can get another WB Val Kilmer title of the era out:
[Show spoiler]The Salton Sea

I thought both movies were actually quite different. De Palma was going the cerebral route with Mission To Mars while Red Planet knew how to just have some fun.

"Let me look around for an alternate power source"
You think Val Kilmer will pull a MacGuyver and figure out a way to get some power.
...He just looks around...
"Nope, just a bunch of rocks"

An interview with Steve Johnson. He’s such a great guy and fun to listen to.
It’s also a fun movie!

Have always been morbidly curious about this one. Not sure if I'll be interested enough to buy it, but...at least it's out there.

Yes love it! Hopefully we also get Mission to Mars on 4K UHD (preferably also from Arrow)
I think both films are awesome and definitely underrated.
