Dawn of the Dead
Why? It's the greatest zombie film ever made. |

Dawn of The Dead is just a great movie period and deserves it's status as a genre classic. It paved the way for the zombie films that followed. It set such a high bar that very few zombie films come close including films made by George A. Romero.
Zombie is a good movie with good atmosphere, good performances (especially Richard Johnson), memorable score, creepy ending and some of the best early zombie make up outside of Tom Savini's work in Day of The Dead. Hell of The Living Dead isn't even in the same league as the other two. So many elements are lifted from Dawn including the great score by Goblin. |

I discovered both Dawn Of The Dead and Zombie around the same time (1988) and have owned both on multiple formats since. I must admit though, that Zombie is the one that I still watch several times a year (must have seen the most recent BU release about six times already) while I haven't seen Dawn in ages (although that could change when the Second Sight UHD drops).
I used to like Hell Of The Living Dead during the VHS era, but when I saw it on Blu sometime ago, I didn't like it at all. ![]() |

Dawn of the Dead I've been watching for years now (first saw it in the mid-2000s, I believe), and while I've always thought it suffered from clumsy social commentary, I can still enjoy it as just a fun zombie comic book movie. It has a nostalgic '70s charm, too, that I really dig.
I only saw Zombie for the first time a couple years ago, but I prefer it in many ways to Romero's film. It's just frikkin' awesome with some great sequences (the zombies rising in the graveyard, for example), fantastic atmosphere and a killer score. Never seen Hell of the Living Dead. |

Dawn of the Dead. It's the king of zombie films. Just like Halloween is the king of slasher films.

Dawn of the Dead. It's not just the greatest zombie film ever made, it's one of the greatest films ever made of any genre.
Zombie is a great too, but Dawn is better. |

I've never heard of "Hell of the Dead" - guess I'll have to add it to my ever-growing WatchList.
I saw "Zombie" a lifetime ago on VHS (or Beta?). Don't remember anything about it now but I don't recall being terribly impressed. George Romero's "Dawn of the Dead" is the zombie movie which all others must measure up to. Zack Snyder's remake was OK but not as good as the 1978 version. Sure would be nice to get a HD copy of the original. |

Really this should be:
Dawn of the Dead (Zombi) vs Zombie (the unofficial sequel Zombi 2) vs Zombie Holocaust (Dr. Butcher M.D.) (the unofficial sequel to the unofficial sequel Zombi 3 in some territories) Dawn of the Dead for the win though |

While Fulci's Zombie was made due to the huge success of Dawn of the Dead in Italy, it always felt like a prequel to the Romero film. It explains how the zombie epidemic, which Dawn of the Dead starts out with, spread to America.
Give it another try on blu-ray. It's a remarkably beautiful looking and atmospheric zombie movie. VHS made it look grubby. |
