Default Song of the South DvD

What do you guys think of this? Has anyone ordered from mayancastledvd before? The quality of their enhanced version is great compared to what I've seen online before. I know its not a legit release since Disney has never released this on dvd before. I'm wondering if its from a laser disk in asia or something.

Had not seen this before either, will give this a shot, I don't see an official release ever coming.

I have it. It's not bad. It's about the best quality you can get for this film until Disney grows a pair and does a proper restoration and puts it on blu ray.

If they thought that innocuous Toy Story 2 joke was worthy of censorship on the new 4Ks, the chances of them releasing this on Blu-ray seem even more remote.

Highly doubtful this would be on physical media.

They are now pushing Disney+ so if sales are low on Disney+ they might just release it on there to get a few extra subscribers (and raise a little controversy).

I know there's a 35mm HD rip floating around on the web, but I've not personally checked it out as I'm not that much into Disney. Disney should just release it and if they're concerned if some find it offensive, then include a note/warning.

Or quietly license it to a third party and perhaps remove any Disney logos from the outer packaging, kind of like what they did back in the early 2000's when they licensed several second tier titles to Anchor Bay.

Kinda surprised it's not on Disney+, where they apparently put a warning message in a few of their older movies.

I wasn't surprised to not see it on Disney Plus. Disney is really weird about Song of the South, it's been re-released in theaters as recently as the 80s or 90s I think. And of course it was released in UK and Japan on VHS and Laserdisc and then bootlegged (how most people watched it before the 35mm HD fan restoration). Disney has released the animated bits on various DVD or VHS compilations. But they won't do a full release, even with a historical bit before it like Birth of a Nation.

I've seen it and aside from the animated bits and Uncle Remus scenes, its slow and kind of boring. But still the animated bits are kind of offensive with the "tar baby" bit and B'rer Rabbit and others talking in stereotypical black voices like the Dumbo crows, not to mention the lackaday and sanitized portrayal of the reconstruction era.

Still though, the scenes with a live action/animated mix which pre-date Mary Poppins by almost 20 years are a great technical achievement, and should be seen in HD. My opinion at least.
