Default I just don't get the hatred some people have for BD and Sony.

Can any of you tell me why do some people hate Sony for some reason? Cos whats the point of hate if you can't find somethin' to hate on?

One example some cite is the root kit fiasco found in some sony cds.

Another is that they saw blu ray as yet another way sony was forcing a proprietary format on people.

I think the bigger reason started from the fact that sony dominated a couple generations of consoles and people were jealous. The most bitter people seemed to be Microsoft fans who viewed sony as public enemy number one. These people spread their venomous hate to sony on the web and I have seen it on so many gaming sites where they kept it up and convinced so many people that hating sony was the cool thing to do.

Sony has had incidents in which thier music cds and flash memory drives installed rootkits onto people's computers. It cost alot of them alot of money to have thier pc's redone. They were also suppose to recall the cds and didn't really do so.
That is 1 or 2 issues i'm aware of.

Years ago I hated Sony because their Walkman cassette players had by *far* the best sound of anything on the market ... they also cost far more than anything on the market and stopped working far more quickly than anything on the market. Because they were so great I kept buying them and they kept breaking, not a particularly palatable turn of events when one is 12-14 and saving up one's pennies for the next purchase. I still have a bit of reflexive hesitation about purchasing Sony products though it's mostly unfounded these days.

Many HD-DVD supporters see the writing on the wall. Their chosen format is dying and they are bitter.

I have read some of the pro-HD-DVD forums and a lot of posters would rather avoid HD of any kind just so Blu and Sony doesn't win. Their startegy seems to include cutting off your nose to spite your face.

Default Sony has made a few huge mistakes

The rootkit, etc.

But I've rarely been dissatified with a Sony product. My PS and PS2? The next console was out and in my hands before I EVER had one problem with my previous. And the PS3 is built to last.

I've had televisions and stereo equipment as well and they've always been a top performer for me.

I love Sony products. I love my Vaio. I even have a Sony 8mm Handycam that I have had for nearly 20 years and it still works like I bought it yesterday. It isn't the best video camera now, but hey it still works great. I think alot of the hate is from XBox fanboys. Interestingly enough, I used to wonder why so many people hated Microsoft, now I don't wonder anymore.

It's mainly because of Sony's massive success (and complete domination) with the PS2 and PS1. They've become like the New York Yankees: they're so good, everyone wants and expects them to lose now.

This is like how (generally) in America we go from a Democrat to a Republican to a Democrat again. People get tired of one thing and they want something else. Not to bring politics into this or anything

I, however, love Sony products and have yet to be disappointed by one. The PS2 was a great system with tons of games, and I'm sure the PS3 in time will have an impressive library. Plus Sony built it to last, unlike the 360, which will be obsolete in a few years.

Every since I could afford to purchase products for myself I have been buying Sony. My thought process back then in a world of pre-mini systems (separates), was that I wanted to buy all the products from the TV to the VCR to the tape deck and have it all match. Sony had everything I wanted to purchase. My confidence in their products was then established, except of course for their speakers (at the time) .

Why do people hate Sony? Generally it's because of words like "rootkit", "proprietary", and "regional coding". People who cry that Sony is anti-consumer need to shut it b/c no company is pro-consumer, they are pro-money. It's not like every other company isn't trying the same crap.

Much of the distaste for Sony I encounter is directly due to the price of their product. I've noticed the same proves true for Apple. While I like both of these companies, you do pay a premium for a product with their name on it. They are seen by many as pompous, self-righteous, and overpriced. What people seem to disregard is that their products are typically high quality and among the best of the industry -- and in turn substantially more expensive than direct competition. But we live in a time where people are always hunting and waiting for the best deal, and as we all know, Sony and Apple aren't exactly known for great deals or wavering too much in their pricing.

Most of the Sony/Blu-Ray hate you see around the internet is almost entirely comprised of the X-Box 360 and/or Microsoft fanboy crowd. The X-Box 1 fanboys were a very bitter crowd during the last PS2 dominated generation. To those folks, Sony is the evil dominant corporation. The X-Box 360 being such a success, with the PS3 not performing so well in its first year, gives the fanboys a sense of moral victory and a "spit in Sony's face" type of fortitude. Obviously, these same folks are the rabid HD-DVD supporters, and they are extremely bitter Sony and the PS3 proved superior and took the proverbial HDM cake.

One last idea is that the aforementioned crowd is hardcore DRM-free. There is a pretty clear division in the industry when it comes to DRM, and the fine line between companies was one of the larger battles symbolized within the Blu/HD-DVD format war.

Ultimately, you should keep in mind that the flaming hate you see on the internet isn't typically for the same reasons Joe Six Pack might not like Sony. Internet fanboys have very different motives than an everyday Joe that can't afford or refuses to pay for Sony product.

Also, back when the War was still an "equal" 50-50 ( ), fear buttons of "Rootkit", "ATRAC" and "Minidisk" were easy to throw around, as "proof" that Sony had another format-spoiling homemade loser on their hands, and that the future would be the "higher road" of the more home-theater aimed HDDVD--
Heck, even threw around a few of those myself back in the day, just to shut up the Gamer-Boiz.

And then...things changed.
HD stagnated, T/MS acted like jerks, Warner went dual, and the Playstation became the coolest gadget you could buy.
Unfortunately, they changed too quickly for the HD camp, who was still playing their old nostalgic '06 Sony-fear hits at the fairground, and wondered why they weren't still getting the same crowds:
"Uh, rootkit? Evil corporation?...Anybody??...Wait, how about everybody on a chorus of 'The PS3 doesn't upscale'?--You remember that one, don't you?... "

I'm not a huge Sony fan in general but the PS3 is a class-act and it was clear to me over a year ago that with the Sony name behind Blu-Ray and the PS3's on-board player, that Blu-Ray would eventually win out. I was right.
