Hasbro's M.A.S.K Movie Moves Forward with a New Writer

Paramount has tapped Bad Boys for Life co-writer Chris Bremner to write their upcoming M.A.S.K. movie. The Fate of the Furious and Straight Outta Compton director F. Gary Gray has been attached to helm the project for nearly two years now. It is believed Gray will still direct the long-awaited movie, though no production start has been revealed. Gray is also on board as a producer for the movie, which is based on the iconic 1980s cartoon and toy line.

As I recall the winner did end up in Son of the Mask. Imagine expecting to meet Jim Carey, and ending up with Jamie Kennedy.

That would be the greatest news ever if this movie actually gets made!

This movie would have to be a CGI mess. I wish movie studios would stop assaulting my childhood!

They have to stay true to the original (costumes, vehicles, characters) if they start changing too much its another failure a la G.I Joe.

This was probably the last cartoon series of my childhood I owned toys from. I was pretty much too old to be playing with toys at the time.

Wait...looked the show up on Wikipedia, and it actually aired from 1985 through '86, so that couldn't have been my last "toy show", as I remember getting toys for the last time in the summer of '88, when I turned 14.

My figure bought me the Condor toy as a birthday gift. Weirdly I don't remember the cartoon much.

I had nearly all the toys, watched the cartoon all the time. This can't be made quick enough.

When I glanced at the news on Twitter I assumed it was a reboot of that Jim Carrey movie. It's the first time I'm hearing about the cartoon/toy line.

Pretty sure the toy episode will be on the next season of THE TOYS THAT MADE US on Netflix.

With the Coronavirus causing delays, I like to imagine that upcoming movies will not be rushed, which means more love into the script and pre-production. Just a fantasy, but anyway I'm hoping that Paramount's upcoming MASK movie will be a good one. Here are some pros and cons of how this movie can turn out:

PROS:
- Paramount's last two pop culture cartoon/video-game related films - Bumblebee and Sonic - were in the right direction. The company listened to the fans and these films were done well. So hopefully, Paramount will respect the 1980s nostalgia MASK had.
- The movie will be directed by F Gary Gray who is a good director and can do crazy action scenes with vehicles - perfect for MASK.
- The writer is Christ Bremner who created an actual very good screenplay for Bad Boys 3, good character development, especially for the villains.
- Even if the movie isnt that good, Paramount will hopefully produce new MASK toys for the movie. There hasnt been any new MASK toys since the Matt Trakker GI Joe action figure. This would be exciting news.
- The MASK movie can get away with being "lit" and "politically correct" because the original series had male and female characters of all nationalities.
- Hopefully, there will be the original characters and vehicles in the film. At least more than one - not just Thunderhawk and Switchblade.
- Paramount was fine to have a teen main character in all the Transformers movies so Im fine with Scott and T-Bob being reinvented for the movie. Make them cool characters instead of annoying as in the cartoon.

CONS:
- Paramount does have a track record of fudging-up the movies for the 1980s pop culture stuff: Dungeouns and Dragons, Transformers, Jem, Power Rangers and GI Joe.
- Paramount's upcoming GI Joe movie Snake Eyes will hopefully be the one that the fans have been waiting for (as with Bumblebee), but then again, this movie's director Robert Schwentke has done R.I.P.D. and the Divergent films. The writer Evan Spiliotopoulos has done the new Charlies Angels movie, Beauty and the Beast and Huntsman: Winter's War. So so director and writer choices so outlook for Snake Eyes seems grim, but it's possible it can be good.
- There is a good chance that the producers will still butcher the nostalgia out of MASK and not do any fan service.
- I wouldnt be surprised if they adapt the hated Season 2 Racing series and turn this into a Speed Racer movie.
- Knowing how Paramount butchered the Transformer designs for the majority of the films, I wont be surprised if the only original looking MASK vehicle will be Thunderhawk - and probably make all the masks look generic and different from original too.
