Pathé reveals first look at Renée Zellweger as Judy Garland

Pathé and Calamity Films have started filming Judy in London and released the first photo of Renée Zellweger as Judy Garland. Zellweger, Academy Award winner and three-time Academy Award nominee (Bridget Jones’s Diary, Cold Mountain, Chicago) is directed by Rupert Goold (a Tony nominee and two-time Olivier winner).

Joining Zellweger in the film are Jessie Buckley (War and Peace), Finn Wittrock (American Horror Story) and Sir Michael Gambon (Harry Potter).

It’s Winter 1968 and showbiz legend Judy Garland arrives in Swinging London to perform in a sell-out run at The Talk of the Town. It is 30 years since she shot to global stardom in The Wizard of Oz, but if her voice has weakened, its dramatic intensity has only grown. As she prepares for the show, battles with management, charms musicians, and reminisces with friends and adoring fans, her wit and warmth shine through. Even her dreams of romance seem undimmed as she embarks on a courtship with Mickey Deans, her soon-to-be fifth husband. And yet Judy is fragile. After working for 45 of her 47 years, she is exhausted; haunted by memories of a childhood lost to Hollywood; gripped by a desire to be back home with her kids. Will she have the strength to go on?

Featuring some of her best-known songs, the film celebrates the voice, the capacity for love and the sheer pizzazz of “the world’s greatest entertainer.” The film is based on a script written by Tom Edge (The Crown) and will be produced by BAFTA winner David Livingstone (Pride) for Calamity Films. Pathé will distribute the film in the UK, France and Switzerland and will handle sales throughout the rest of the world.

She actually looks a lot like Garland in that photo. I hope the movie turns out well.

Wow, she looks more like Judy than I expected. I guess it helps, though, that she had that plastic surgery a few years ago. Have they said if Renee's doing her own singing like Joaquin Phoenix in Walk in the Line, or are they using Judy's actual voice like Selena did?

Judy Garland is my all-time favorite actress and singer, so needless to say, I'm excited for this. I thought the ABC biopic Me and My Shadows: Life with Judy Garland was quite good, so if it's at least up to that level, I'll be happy with this new film.

I didn’t know this had already filmed. Another entry for the packed Best Actress field this year?

It would really be something if Renee could score her first Oscar nom since winning like 15 years ago.

I also got confused, but it was because I mixed her up with Judge Judy.

From these recent articles the resemblance is stunning.
And we can place our early bet for the next oscar contender. The irony if Garland will finally get an oscar as a character and not an actress!

Unless this completely sucks, she's almost certainly getting an Oscar nom for this. Hollywood loves a Hollywood biopic, and she's halfway there by getting the look right.

Judy Garland did get an Oscar as an actress, she was the recipient of the Academy Juvenile Award for the year 1939.

Renée Zellweger looks great, maybe a bit too good. She looks more like TV show Judy than 1968 Judy but that's Hollywood.

This might be too sad for me.

I’m trying to be fair since Garland’s singing is obviously inimitable, but I’m not feeling Zellwegers vocals at all. That sounded so listless and more in the style of someone like Lana Del Rey.
