Default HDTV v. Blu-ray

I recently purchased a PS3 mainly for the Blu-ray capabilites but when I popped in x-Men 3 the results were no where near what I expected. Mainly becasue my HD Cable Picture is much better than the Blu-ray picture. I have to believe I am doing somethin wrong. I have a 61" Samsung DLP TV with a maximum resolution of 1080i. The PS3 is hooked up to the TV via HDMI and to a surround sound system via a fiber-optic cable (no HDMI port on the receiver). I think I have the settings right (the PS3 is set to 1080i output) as the games look great but the Blu-ray is very disapponting. Do I have to have a 1080p TV to get a good picture? Help!

i think the ps2 will only play blu-ray at full 1080p not 1080i and in teh event that you don`t a full hd tv i think it down converts it to 480p. but i do not know just go to google and serch it

No, the PS3 does not down-convert to 480 if you don't have 1080p, it looks just fine at 1080i

I too have the same set up with HDMI to the TV, and fibre to the receiver.

One thing to considder is that cable USUALLY broadcasts in 720p... progressive pictures are MUCH more tollerant of action and motion (such as football) By interlacing the 1080p you drop the quality a bit.

And unless you're watching OTA HD is always downresed. Best oyu get is 1440x1080 and for Voom channels on Dish you get 1280x1024. Plus compression it really cranked up.

And even with OTA, you don't necessessarily get 1080i. ABC, FOX and ESPN all use 720p... Somewhere I read that because of the interlacing, the actual picture quality of 1080i is somewhere around 800ish, and when you throw in action scenes, 720p kind of makes more sense (especially for ESPN, with high action sports)

Thanks for the 411...
Not sure what a "Troll Post" is but I call it like I see it, and right now of the three people I know personally with PS3's three of them think as I do with regards to the picture quality vs. HD Cable. I will try setting the PS3 to 720p to see if it helps but I have to say thus far I am unimpressed with Blu-ray...
I am not, however, ruling out a screw up on my part with regards to set up.

I just hope that the problem isn't the fact that I don't have a 1080p TV.

I watched X-Men 3 on a 720p projector 92" screen (through a PS3) and it looked absolutely gorgeous and thrashed anything ive ever seen on sat/cable HD feeds. I have no clue what you are seeing tho.

You definitely have a setting wrong as do your friends. The PS3's picture is far superior to HD cable.

Vince, let me chime in with the guys: you should see a much better picture on your PS3. Something in your setup is wrong.

I was under the impression that PS3 still could not utilize 1080i? I thought it is was 480p, 720p, 1080p or bust.

Either way, I've found view on on Blu-Ray to be far superior to HD Cable and Upconverted DVD. I'm running a 1080p screen though, but I get the looking through a window effect, and I can't imagine the drop off to 1080i would be something so drastic.

Is your TV calibrated? Do you have another HDMI cable you could try?

Well, so far I'm quite dissaponted with Blu-ray titles (my player is PS). My older Pioneer DV-79AVi does upscale to 1080i amazingly. I did compare "Corpse Bride" on regular DVD with Blu-ray: there's a very little difference in favour to Blu-ray. The "Italian Job" (new one) on Blu-ray is even worse than regular DVD. "Cars" on DVD is just stunning, I still have to see a title on Blu-ray with such quality. I understand that video transfer for Blu-ray is far from perfection but for now -- I'm dissaponted. BTW, I do have new 52'' Mitshu 1080P TV (HDMI hook up) so it's not a hardware problem.

There must be something wrong with the setup, on a 1080p TV of that size there is a day and night difference between Blu-ray and DVD. Unfortunately I don't know how the PS3 settings work, but I am sure others on this forum will be more than happy to help.

As for PQ don't be fooled by the FUD, it is awesome!

That is for games only, and even then only games that are not designed to play 1080i.

There's nothing wrong with my setup. It could be a day/night difference if you compare Blu-ray to a cheap (even upscaling) DVD player but there's no much difference with top of the line DVD player with Blu-ray titles they sell now. Probably my experience is only related to few Blu-ray titles I've watched but I still remember as almost 10 years ago any DVD title made day-and-night difference compared to VHS. When I've watched my first Blu-ray (Talladega Nights) I just didn't get same feeling.
BTW, PQ for PS3 games is stunning

You need to get Black Hawk Down, Kingdom of Heaven, and Crank. These are real A grade transfers.

I think upscaling players have blurred the line between DVD and Blu-ray, but even so on a 1080p TV larger than 42" there should be a big difference regardless of whether the upscaling player is made by Meridian or Shinco. I noticed straight away, on my 46" Sony XBR2, and I had a Denon 3930, which uses a HQV scaler. It is probably more to do with the titles though, some are not so good, TN is one of those, and some are amazing, Crank, which I can't wait to see when it comes out here.

Let's put it this way. If you think Corpse Bride looks close to DVD quality on Blu-ray, you automatically think the same about the HD-DVD version (since they are the exact same video information). In that case, there's no where for you to go in HD...at least with your current set-up (i.e. settings, cables, TV, etc.).

I have the movie The Italian Job and i can say without a doubt it is drop dead georgous. I have a Sony SXRD and can tell you there is a huge difference between dvd and Blu Ray. Definately a setup problem. Corpse Bride was also stellar and High Def Digest gave it 4.5 stars for picture quality and Peter Bracke is hard to please, so that is really saying something

I really fail to see what is your point. And what HD-DVD has to do with it.
I personally expect the new technology to significantly surpass older one (in a my, customer perspective). I don't want to pay extra to get same amount of noise and artefacts at higher bit rate, especially then it comes to relatively new titles. So far, they are selling a junk at premium price in both camps

Hate to say it catB, but there must be something not quite right with your set up, I have an upscaling DVD as well as a PS3 (both over HDMI), and the difference IS night and day, and that is only over a 1080i connection which the TV downrezes to its native resolution of 768 or somesuch (the joys of older high def) over the 1080p, it should knock your socks off.

You won't see much difference in animation titles, because they just don't have the complexity and detail that a live action shot does, I am still waiting for my copy of corpse bride to arrive (hopefully this week), but I am thinking that the faces of the characters won't have too many pores or wrinkles.

If you want to see a truely amazing difference between BD and DVD, compare the searchers... it is jaw dropping what they were able to do with this vintage movie!
