![]() ![]() Rebecca, a tabloid photographer played by Michelle McBride (Subspecies), uses a fake invitation to sneak into an exclusive party at a Bavarian castle so that she can get the scoop on an older soap opera actress, played by Brenda Vaccaro (Supergirl). The event, hosted by Ludwig, an eccentric millionaire played by Herbert Lom (The Dead Zone), revolves around Edgar Allan Poe's short story, “The Masque of the Red Death", but, unbeknownst to the fun-loving and conniving guests, people are actually dying one by one at the hands of a mysterious figure in a red mask and hood. The 1989 slasher horror feature, The Masque of the Red Death, was directed by Alan Birkinshaw, who had helmed an adaptation to Agatha Christie's story, Ten Little Indians, earlier that year, and, in terms of narrative, it has more in common with that Christie novel than with the Poe source. In fact, the movie, which is set in present day, makes no references whatsoever to a plague. Scattered references to Poe tales, including “The Black Cat”, “The Pit and the Pendulum”, and the titular story are plentiful, but this is not a faithful endeavor in any strict sense. As far as late 1980s popcorn fare is concerned, this one is entertaining enough, mostly because of the ensemble cast, which, in addition to McBride, Vaccaro, and Lom, features Frank Stallone (Savage Harbor), Christine Lunde (Young Rebels), and Simon Poland (Nemesis 4: Death Angel). The murder scenes are decently intense, especially during the final half, but the main attractions of this feature are the extravagant costumes worn by all involved. This Scorpion Releasing Blu-ray gives us a great-looking video presentation, along with strong audio for the rock music at hand. A Nathanial Thompson commentary track delivers plenty of background material. |
