Criterion The Beat That My Heart Skipped (2005)

Quote:
A riveting character study in the guise of a gritty underworld thriller, Jacques Audiard’s international breakthrough features an explosive performance from Romain Duris as a real-estate broker torn between the dirty dealings of his slumlord father (Niels Arestrup) and his recently rekindled love for classical piano. Can music offer salvation from a life of sin? Winner of eight César Awards, including Best Film, this bold reimagining of the New Hollywood cult classic Fingers showcases Audiard’s gift for balancing breathtaking tension with galvanic human drama.

This doesn't include the Jacques Audiard interviews or London Q&A from the Artificial Eye BD

Or the commentary from the French release... While this is one of my top 5 favorite films, I have to say this release is disappointing. No upgraded master, and not much in terms of new extras. However, I guess being a Criterion release, more attention will be brought to this masterpiece of a film.

I assume the commentary is in French?

Yes, but they could still have provided subtitles for it, like Sony has for Audiard's commentaries on Rust and Bone and A Prophet.

That's first assuming they could get the commentary. But it would also be time-consuming and cost money to transcribe that commentary to English, and that just might not be worth it.

I've actually never watched a foreign-language film with a foreign-language commentary track before. How does that work as far as subtitles go? Are both the film and the commentary's subtitles shown on screen simultaneously, or is it just the commentary's subtitles? I imagine the former could be a bit of a headache to deal with on screen.

Sorry for the late reply—been busy lately and I didn't see this question

It's just subtitles for the commentary. I guess it could be time-consuming and cost money, sure, but I don't see it costing much more than one of their video essays or other things they do regularly. I may be speaking in generalization, and perhaps not always true, but it seems that Criterion doesn't value the audio commentary as much as they used to.

Fortunately I speak French fluently so I can listen to Audiard's commentary without subtitles, but it unfortunately means I have to keep the French Blu-ray.
