Thumbs up Dark City

Not that I need any more movies to double dip on, but this is my #1. Severely disappointed in this site to see that this doesn't have a topic yet (which will probably transform into a deep disappointment in myself when someone links a thread to the topic that I somehow missed).

Let's go Dark City 4K!

Thoroughly agree. I assume you mean DC ‘98, not DC ‘50 (which is probably also a great noir film which I’ve yet to see). DC98 is one of the great, for me at least, discoveries of my last 20 years, SPOILER ALERT.................... with one of the great mid-film reveals in screen history. Never fails to make my jaw drop, even on repeat viewings. I’m with you all the way on this one, bradnoyes!

Oh yeah, I still remember that moment from the first time I saw this back when it was in the theaters. First time a movie truly blew my mind. Seeing this as a teenager was what first turned me on to seeking out more than just mainstream stuff. I think it would look beautiful in the format.

If the intermediate is a 4k scan, count me in for a upgrade. Lets hope they stay away from the DNR, a little bit of thick grain here and there won't ruin my experience.

This movie would be one of my absolute top picks as well. The extra detail that could come in from all the darkness would be incredible if the transfer is done justice.

Yep. I have it on Blu and I would upgrade with a good transfer.

Recently watching The Matrix on UHD made me want this even more. I didn't see a lot of movies in the cinema in the late 90's but these were two that left a real impression on me and they have some similarities thematically and aesthetically. Seeing how great The Matrix turned out just made me want this more.

You made me feel a bit old! I haven't seen this little caper in many years, so yes I wouldn't mind watching it again in 4K.

A 4K would be great And the audio is already 7.1 so an Atmos upgrade wouldnt be hard

Question would the transfer be a Native or Upscaled 4K transfer?

And I prefer the DIR cut esp for the opening

I would definitely want a new 4K scan. I’m watching the BD as I type this and it does look pretty nice upscaled on the Oppo in forced Dolby Vision but there’s some issues with DNR and it would be a big disappointment if they just upscaled the old BD.

But man, this movie is just so good. It’s going to be a travesty if it never gets a release on the format. Would be great to get both cuts. I prefer the DC but the theatrical is a really fun watch too. No time wasted. The movie just drops you right into things and never lets up.

This year was it's 20th anniversary so I guess we'll have to wait till 2023 now.

From time to time, I've been thinking about this movie lately.

Remember seeing it in LOEWS in SDDS sound, supposedly a sci-fi masterpiece.

It was very compelling movie, I recall. I always wanted to visit this movie one more time.

I want this one in 4K and DTS:X.

We need a proper Dark City UHD transfer in our lives. HDR would reveal so much detail.

Sorry to bump this thread, but I really just wanted to say that we need the director's cut of Dark City in 4K UHD with a brand new restoration (free from digital noise reduction). The DC of Dark City is really fantastic! When WB, when??

I suspect they DNR'ed it for the Directors Cut master so they would have to restore film elements from scratch to roll back from that, basically they'd have to do it all over again. who knows if that would be possible but i'd love to see it happen.

I have the german blu ray and it is only the theatrical but it has no DNR.. does the directors cut spoil the movie at the start? I think it was that one that takes the mystery out of it by telling you what happened at the beginning.

No, the director's cut does NOT spoil the movie at the start. The DC is the better cut, for sure.

This is just screams a Criterion or Arrow 4K remaster! And include both cuts to make everybody happy!
