Default Nail Gun Massacre 4K UHD (1985)

Quote:
IT’S CHEAPER THAN A CHAINSAW!

A young woman is sexually assaulted by a group of construction workers at a building site in a small Texas town. Suddenly, mutilated bodies begin turning up. Nailed up. Nailed to trees. Nailed to pavement. Nailed to each other! The nail gun maniac is deadly, and no one knows who they’ll hammer down next. It’s a piercing, no holds-barred, trip into industrial-strength horror!

Terror Vision has worked meticulously with the surviving Nail Gun Massacre elements, and we think we nailed it. Presented for the first time in 4K UHD from a mixture of surviving elements, Terror Vision is proud to present this glorious and trashy masterpiece with a brand new restoration and HDR color grade! Along with various presentations of the film - this release is full of archival material along with brand new pieces for this release!

Notes On Restoration: The Nail Gun Massacre UHD w/HDR was sourced from vaulted elements which were all scanned and restored in order to bring you the best release possible with a massive upgrade from the previous releases. Here at Terror Vision we worked for over 6 painstakinglmonths in order to gather, clean, scan, restore, and do a new HDR color grade on this 80s slasher classic!

Well, I just ordered my first Terror Vision release! I haven’t seen this one in nearly 15 years, but hopefully it’s as much of a blast as I remember.

I have never heard of this. Looks neat. But brings to mind all the movies that think you can fire a nail gun like an actual gun and headshot people from across the room.

2 copies pre-ordered! I am so glad Terror Vision decided to give Nail Gun Massacre the full 4K treatment instead of the standard blu it was originally reported to be getting. Does vaulted elements mean they found some better source material than the print they originally had to work with? I don't love the import artwork used on the slip cover like I do the original USA Magnum VHS art & title font, which American video store dwellers grew up with. I sure hope that it makes it to the case insert. Or maybe even the flip side of this slip cover? Hoping strongly! Can't wait to experience this!

Based on what Brad said on the livestream last night, it sounds like they were using the same elements all along but realized during the process that they could be used for UHD and started their work over.

I would have preferred an RLM commentary, not Hysteria Continues.

Obviously, spoilers, but it's hilarious:

I'm still thinking about this upcoming 4k. Unbelievable! Also unbelievable last year, Topps finally came out with a garbage pail kid using my name. Being the 'oh the horrible' series, I was still flabbergasted by them making a Nail Gun Massacre themed sticker...using the old vhs art as reference, of course! And my name! I'll have to store mine in the case.

Received my copy today. Just note that the 4k only has the original 1:33:1 aspect ratio cut. The archival restoration 1:78:1 version is only in special features on the standard Blu-ray, not on the 4K disc, along with the "archival restoration in 4:3". Meaning there are three version crammed onto the standard Blu-ray.

Are the “archival restoration(s)” based on what was on the Code Red release, or is a different restoration entirely?

The archival restoration is the "Code Red", which I believe was actually performed originally for Synapse for their earlier dvd release. Code Red brought it to us in it's native 1080p, with some tinkering (it looked much less yellow than Synapse's). There has been no other restorations until Terror Vision's.

On the "3 versions crammed onto 1 standard blu ray disc" TV did a terrific job of this. Their own transfer plays at a hearty Vinegar Syndrome style, mid 30's to mid 40s mbps. The 2 archival transfers play at high teens to low 20's mbps...this is exactly how it was served on the original Code Red blu ray + 88's in the UK. Nothing to worry about.

I think I remember originally liking this. Either rented or bought the DVD and didn't like it. It's been a while, so I wonder if I will like the UHD?

I did notice on the new 4K scan that there is significant "waving" on the negative during part of the film, which wasn't there at all on the older HD scans.

The negatives must have encountered bad shrinkage issues at some point. Thankfully it isn't the entire movie, but is a lengthy part of the middle of it... you almost need to take dramamine at times.

Never heard of this film before. Is it a romantic comedy?

Yes, it is a comedy. And one "lover" apparently lost his real life wife after she watched the film. Now that's true romance!
Sadly, still no reviews or comparisons for this new 4k release One detail I've noticed on Terror Vision's transfer is it's wide open framing, even seeing the gate debris. I think we're seeing more image on all 4 sides than ever before, but haven't taken the time to properly compare.
I was lucky and snagged a 3rd copy, this time slipless, on eBay for $20.50. It goes perfect on my vintage rotating "video store rack". This will be my beater copy that I will lend out, let sunfade, etc. I can't get myself to discard the slip, so this was a terrific score! I thought I'd have to wait months to get a non-slipped copy. It displays authentically beautiful. Perfect for the rack's esthetic.

So I got a chance to take a look at this and compare it to the old Code Red blu-ray

The Code Red Blu-ray was a decent transfer, but dated. Grain structure like most code red was okay and some damage was present. Color looks very faded on the code red, like the cover of one of those video tapes you'd see in the rental store that was always sitting in the sun.

The Terror Vision 4K disc is a much fresher transfer, with better grain structure and more organic appearance. Color is *far* more vibrant, yet not always fully color-corrected. So, you will see some scenes that have some tint to them. Audio fidelity also is superior to the Code Red disc.

In summary, the TV 4K disc is a much newer and more vibrant transfer and I'd say the clearly superior disc, however if another company decides to revisit this film with a bigger budget in the future there is room for additional color work.

This isn't one of those shot-on-video movies is it?
