Criterion will probably be the winner in terms of special features but this could easily have better video quality if they use the newer Gaumont master. Which I really hope they do.

I wouldn't be surprised if they went with the European transfer which has been the case with other films.

I don't think Ive ever seen this film properly and Ive had the DVD on my rental list for ages - Ill just wait for the blu now.

I'm glad they'll be using the restored master (the "old" Criterion one is up-to-date to say the least), but I also hope they took time to rebalance the awful blown-out contrast which is SO annoying on the French release, especially the whites - almost unwatchable at times.

Great opening sequence. Not something I would go out of my way to watch again, though.

Post pics please because I'm really interested in getting this because the Criterion release doesn't work with the "Stop 1" method on my player

Mine came Saturday, thought the restoration looked solid, but still waiting for the review - my only criticism was the cover art.

No problem, RiFiFi. This is the time of the year when mail really slows down so I cannot estimate when things will arrive.

I will make sure to update this thread with the review link

...Hello there Svet ! how are you? We haven't seen each other for a long time !

... I wanted to point out that I found this article that talks about a "new" restoration for 8 1/2, which will have its world premiere on November 27 next, to Turin Film Festival, carry the article in Italian, I think you will not have problems to translate it yourself ... :

...And here there's another one...:

""

...And this is anyway a translate in English...:

8 1/2 restored at the 31st Torino Film Festival :

"" The Experimental Cinematography Centre - National Film Achive in collaboration with RTI Mediaset Group and Medusa Film will proudly present the prestigious digital restoration of Federico Fellini's 1963 masterpiece 8 1/2. The film will return to movie theatres in a 2K version completed by DeLuxe Digital Roma starting from the original negatives.
8 1/2 stars Marcello Mastroianni as a filmmaker on the verge of a crisis, obsessed and haunted by the ghosts of his past and the various female figures in his life. It also stars Sandra Milo and Claudia Cardinale, while the beautiful black and white cinematography is by Gianni Di Venanzo and the unforgettable music is by Nino Rota. Fellini's work won Best Foreign Language Film and Best Costume at the Academy Awards and numerous other international awards (among them the Grand Prize at the Moscow International Film Festival).
The restoration of Fellini's 8 1/2 marks the start of the collaboration between the National Film Archive (Cineteca Nazionale) and the RTI - Mediaset Group, aimed at preserving and enhancing the value of Italian national film heritage. The world premiere of the restored movie will take place at the 31st Torino Film Festival on Wednesday 27 November 2013.””

...So, my questions is...:

...The article talks about new ... "Restoration", but if the French Master released by Gaumont (as we all know) has already a new Restoration finally corrected and faithful to the intentions of the Director, when it was made FURTHER this "new restoration" ?

...Also because I do not think that it was done in a few months or a year, as the Gaumont edition dates back to mid-2011, and frankly I do not see how it can be presented something better than the latter which I repeat is ALREADY SENSATIONAL.

... Also, from the site of Argent Films for their new edition BD release Monday November 11, reports in detail (already posted last summer by Rezpekt) the following ...:

""EXTRAS

* Digitally RE-MASTERED 50th ANNIVERSARY EDITION IN HIGH DEFINITION from restored print to also commemorate 20 years from Federico Fellini death.

* Exclusive 50 min documentary on the famously lost ending of 8 1/2: LOST SEQUENCE

* Interview with Assistant Director Lina Wertmuller

* Theatrical Trailers

* New improved English Subtitles

* Extensive PR & social media campaign""

...according to what is stated in the details of the "New" English edition, it should be exactly this new "restored version" to be presented in their BD, but if that was so, how can that be released from them , first in the Blu Ray Disc version ? since the world premiere as reported in the articles that I posted higher up will be held on 27 November ?

...it would be absurd ...

...I remember also your words, in response to a follower last summer, when was the announced release of the new edition, which I quote ...:

"""The French and U.S. releases -- Gamount and Criterion's -- use very different transfers. It would be interesting to see which one Argent's release uses, because if it is Gaumont's transfer this will be the version for English-speakers to own.

Pro-B" ""

... I agree 100% with you, and also I think (hope) that will be used the exact same Master of the French Gaumont, the motive for which to prefer the BD of the Argent Films to that Gaumont will be only for the speech forced subtitles (this for Italian users), which will be absent in the Argent edition , while for English users here in Europe instead (and for the all others English speaker Users in the World, of Course), for the presence of subtitles in English, and also for some "new" extra that it should contain, also because the others should be more or less the same of the Gaumont Edition.

... In any case, what do you think ?

...Did you know about this further "new" Restoration ?

...And again, this is a picture of the back cover of the French edition I have, as you can see from photos, in detail reads ...:

"Avec le Soutien du Centre National de la Cinematographie"

...so, is it possible that this new restoration will be presented on November 27 in Turin, will be the same that is contained in the BD Edition Released by Gaumont ?

...Also I would like to ask you one other thing, these screen that were included in the last update made by the Webmaster on September 11, where he reported the news of the new release of the Argent Films, belong to the latter right ?
...because, the rendered image and the Master from which derive these screen, seems to be "similar" (SIMILAR NOT IDENTICAL) to that of the French Gaumont Edition , and certainly does not seem to belong to the old Criterion edition ...:

Quote:

...I have the Wonderful BD of the French Gaumont Edition ( who has a new Restoration ) and I can confirm that is the most faithful to the will of the Director at the Epoch of Shooting, what all the (many) consider to be a "defect " ( the discourse on brightness "supposed" to be incorrect and shot) is instead on the contrary an absolute value , as with the previous and old restoration (visible in the old Criterion BD, with old master )
was deliberately contrasted to bring some key sequences to a more "correct" of white, from a visual point of view , without knowing that those sequences Fellini wanted them specially overexposed and with white " bust" but for his will and not for his mistake .
...In the new Restoration, Fortunately everything was corrected and returned to the values that were originally designed and took , in fact, and everything again, is fortunately visible in the BD of the French Gaumont Edition , like it or not is (currently) the best (and Faithful ) edition BD existing in the world.

...And just to understand each other, I quote and carry you a paragraph , although may not be needed , as it knows well that was so... :

"""Other sequences instead Fellini took the overexposed (ie, overly bright effect obtained in the process of printing positives), and the sequence at the source, when Marcello is in line with other people, with his glass in his hand. Deliberately dazzled This aspect of the scene unfortunately has been lost with the recent restoration of the film. restorers have redone the sequence with a perfect black and white highly contrasted, thereby forgetting the original intention of Fellini. ""

...Also in Italian, you are Italian (like me) right ? ...:

...Obviously, the article refers to the old restoration done at the time in Italy from "Cinema Forever", while in the last French and New Master Gaumont has been corrected and adjusted everything, thankfully.

...So, in the French in Edition the film has been restored correctly, and in the will of the Director's intentions , though apparently it may not seem so, the "unnaturalness" was the vision that Fellini wanted for those determined sequences, while in the Criterion BD instead ( wich use an old Master ) seems to be the opposite, and instead was (it was) made an erroneous "correction".
