Belgium Young Ahmed | Dardenne brothers

"Wild Bunch will have a script in Cannes for the film which is due to shoot this autumn. Loach’s long-time producer Rebecca O’Brien is producing alongside Why Not Productions and the Dardennes brothers’ Films du Fleuve.

The Dardennes are also gearing up to shoot their eleventh joint feature Ahmed, a contemporary tale about Belgian teenager who plots to kill his teacher after embracing an extremist interpretation of the Koran.

'It’s the tale of the radicalisation of a young boy in Belgium,' says Maraval. 'A strong aspect of the script is the way it opens a debate around the interpretation of the Koran by a young kid under influence.'" SOURCE

EDIT: the official title is Young Ahmed (Le Jeune Ahmed).

I haven't seen nearly enough of their films as I would like (four), but each one I've definitely appreciated. So, looking forward to this too, obviously.

I've seen only four of their films so far, too (Lorna's Silence, Two Days One Night, The Kid with a Bike, L'enfant), but those were enough to make me consider Jean-Pierre and Luc two of the most valuable contemporary filmmakers. I'll be eagerly anticipating Ahmed. A Cannes 2019 debut seems likely.

I've seen:

Two Days, One Night (absolutely brilliant)

La Promesse

The Kid With a Bike

The Unknown Girl

Actually, I need to see La Promesse, to be honest. I thought it was very good, but I watched it very late at night. I feel like it definitely needs a second viewing.

Genuinely want to ask people. Do you not feel this type of subject matter is stereotypical and sloppy and bandwagon jumping to fuel a stereotype that's almost a minority viewpoint at most?

Loved Two Days One Night and The Kid with a Bike so looking forward to this. Will try to see the rest of their filmography beforehand.

What you call "stereotypical" the Dardenne brothers, who are Belgian, probably call it "reality".

Reality is that for a group comprised of over 1 billion humans, you're talking less than 1% as a group going through such actions and even then, the media focus is disproportionate to the actual category of offences comitted on a global scale. So again, i ask. What is the appeal of such subject matter? A stereotypical representation to further ingrain media and personal bias of a group or is there some genuine deconstruction going on to try and understand the process of radicalisation and if so, why go with a stereotypical subject matter rather than staying generic?

I'm trying my hardest to keep this within forum rules btw.

Wow, does that look good. It's going to be incredibly unpleasant. But it looks very good.

Not that I'm surprised in the slightest.
