if you don't care about ps2 playback, get the 40 and buy a bigger hard drive

Hmm, I think the 80g has wifi and the 40g doesn't. I've also heard that the 40g doesn't play PS2 games although that wouldn't bother you. Not really sure of anyother differences.
I have the 60g so not sure on this new models. To me the wifi was a big deal (at that time the other PS3 was the 20g and didn't have wifi). Any version you get, it is a really good machine. Don't bother about the hard drive space, you can easily change that for a much bigger one later on.

no. the only thing you're losing in the 40 by not getting the 80 is ps2 playback and super audio cd playback

Get the 40 GB then! I have a 60 GB and I never have problem with space and Ive downloaded all of the demos available from the playstation store thats what you'll use your hard drive for. Demos, movie trailers, and wallpapers and stuff. 40 GB should be plenty for the average gamer.

Differences
40gb- No PS2/PS1 Backwards compatibility, less gb's

There are only 3 differences between the 40 and 80 ps3

40 gig:
2 USB ports instead of 4 and doesnt have the other misc card ports(the part that flips open on the 80 gig does not open on the 40)

Doesn’t support ps2 games
40 gig HD instead of 80

Both have wifi
Both play ps1 games

In fact I have heard that the 40 gig is a bit quieter(if thats even possible) and doesnt get as hot and uses less power???. Not sure if thats true or not.

No SACD playback on the 40GB.

And yes the 40GB is even quieter, uses less power and doesn't get as hot. It's TWUE.

Exclamation USB does matter

2 USB ports vs 4 on the 80GB does matter. Try playing Rock Band when your 40GB PS3 only has 2 USB ports and you need at least 3 (4 if you happen to have a 2nd guitar) and you don't have a USB hub...

I found that out the hard way

usb hub if 2 isn't enough. you can't add ps2 or sacd playback. so i listed the important things
