A likely double-dip for me.

The Brazilian DVD only has the complete miniseries, and I'm curious about the theatrical cut.

Criterion Scenes from a Marriage (1973)

Quote:
Scenes from a Marriage chronicles the many years of love and turmoil that bind Marianne and Johan, tracking their relationship through matrimony, infidelity, divorce, and subsequent partnerships. Originally conceived by director Ingmar Bergman as a five-hour, six-part television miniseries, the film is also presented in its three-hour theatrical cut. Shot largely in intense, intimate close-ups by cinematographer Sven Nykvist and featuring flawless performances by Liv Ullmann and Erland Josephson, Bergman's emotional X-ray reveals the deep joys and pains of a complex bond.
Quote:
  • High-definition digital transfers of both the television version and the U.S. theatrical version of the film, with uncompressed monaural soundtracks on the Blu-ray
  • Interview with director Ingmar Bergman from 1986
  • Interviews from 2003 with actors Liv Ullmann and Erland Josephson
  • Interview from 2003 with Bergman scholar Peter Cowie comparing the two versions of Scenes from a Marriage
  • PLUS: An essay by author Phillip Lopate

I'll certainly grab the upgrade, but I wish Criterion would dig deeper into Bergman's filmography and deliver us several of his other films and teleplays.

Always stoked for more Bergman. I've been holding off buying Criterion's Sawdust & Tinsel dvd hoping a Blu Ray would be announced. With this and Virgin Spring being announced so close together I don't know if thats a good sign or a bad sign for even more Bergman.

Perhaps my favorite Bergman so I was sure to pre-order this during the last BN Criterion sale. Was expecting a digipack like Fanny and Alexander but it's a standard case.

Since this was made for TV, should it be presented at 25fps? Or was it shot at 24fps? Will a 25fps version be released in Europe?

Has anybody compared the theatrical version here with the Bergman box set version that shares the disc with Saraband? Just wondering if there are compression issues compared to this release.

I don't have the single release but I compared boxset file sizes with DVDbeaver's single release data and got this:

TV version boxset: 46.3gb
TV version single: 46.3gb

Theatrical version boxset: 25.7gb
Theatrical version single: 40.9gb

The TV version appears to be the same and untouched but wow did the theatrical get hit hard. Shame on them for cramming them to reduce disc count, that compromises Saraband too. While it IS the theatrical cut, I don't like how Saraband gets a measily 16gb due to that. I mean at least if it looks good but still. Ick.

Just checked the disc from the box set -- both movies look quite terrible.
Shame on Criterion for cramming them together in the first place!

That's too bad. One of my favorite Bergman films.

I don't have the disc and can't speak to what the issues with Saraband's transfer might be, but bear in mind it was a pretty early shot-in-HD movie, and a lot of those look kind of soft now.

Yes. Some of it probably is due to the amount of material on the disc but this is also true. I’ve only taken a brief look at everything in the set and I thought Saraband was probably about on par with what a Sony Pictures Classic Blu-ray would have looked like, at least going by some of the ones I have, like Leviathan. Not perfect but far from bad.

Scenes From a Marriage does have problems, partly compression, partly because it’s a really old master. Still, entirely watchable, let’s cut the ridiculous hyperbole.

Did any one else notice this slight error on the encoding of the theatrical version of Scenes from a Marriage (It's on the the 12:33 mark).

What is that? I believe it's not an error on my disc or my end. It seems to be inherent within the transfer itself. Can anyone please confirm this anomaly? I hope that I'm wrong, but it may be due to the fact that it's crammed in with Saraband. Anybody with the stand-alone release encountering this issue as well?

Edit: This doesn't appear on the TV version, btw.

I'm currently going through the TV version, from the Bergman box set. While the transfer isn't awful for its age (early 2000s, I believe), I wish they would do a new 2K transfer. It won't make it look like it was shot on 35mm, but at least a new transfer and spreading it over two discs for better compression would help render the grain in a more pleasing manner.

This scan is really twenty-one years old? Wow. I thought it was mainly cramming five hours on one disc that makes it look so bad. How funny that with almost any other release, Criterion will tell you when the movie was remastered, by whom and how it was scanned, but when the scan is comparatively ancient they omit that information, because it's unflattering.

They might not have put down who was behind the remaster for this but they definitely did put down the information regarding how it was scanned. They also have put down the information regarding "ancient scans" (e.g. House of Games, Betty Blue).

But they didn't put it before or after the video in their standard text, which they nearly always have the last couple of years, whether for TV shows or movies. I can turn on Dekalog and find "2015" and "4K" written after the end credits of every episode.
