Does anyone here have any recollections (good or bad) of FMV (full motion video) games? The games I can think of are the two Mad Dog McCree games, along with Who Shot Johnny Rock?
I also remember a short-lived games machine called the Philips CD-i. Only recall one game for it, called Voyeur (actor Robert Culp appeared in the game). Last edited by OceanBlue; 05-01-2020 at 09:45 PM. |

It's one of those eras that you pretty much just had to be there to appreciate on some level. At the time it was a pretty big novelty to have somewhat of a cinematic quality with live-action sequences in a video game. As a kid I found it pretty mesmerizing and it was kind of like the equivalent of seeing blu ray for the first time as visual eye candy. In retrospect, the vast majority of the games using this technology come off as pretty campy now. But I still enjoy some of them for what they are and an attempt to try something new at the time with improvements in technology and greater storage capacity, etc. They were like interactive movies. Phantasmagoria is still one of my favorite games and they spent a whole lot of money filming and mapping out the game. It was pretty short lived style that represents a point in time.

![]() ![]() Dragon's Lair II was probably the best of the animated "non-games." Did anyone play Ground Zero Texas on Sega CD? I think that was the last FMV game I bought on disc. |

I played and enjoyed a lot of these back when they were a big thing. I was particularly a fan of Wing Commander 3 and 4, Lands of Lore 2, Dark Forces II and the Rebel Assault games. Some of those just used FMV for the cutscenes and had proper games next to that.
More recently I played Myst and The 7th Guest for the first time and I have to say... I loved them. I'd be pretty happy to see more FMV games again, and there have been a few notable ones recently with Her Story and Telling Lies. |
