Default Why all the double-disc sets??

If Blu-Ray discs can hold 10 times more data than standard DVD's then why are there so many 2-disc blu-ray movies?? Why not just but both discs onto one?? Is it just to attract more people to a particular movie because it's a "Special Two-Disc Edition!!" ??

beCAUSE, the space is taken up by phenomenal picture and audio encoding plus special features on that disc in hd (like PotC:AWE)

I think its cheaper to release two single layer blu ray discs then to make a single double layer disc. You have to remember movies in full HD with uncompressed sound takes up alot of space not to mention all the features, protection and stuff

No, it's not cheaper. Not even close

It's all about devoting space to quality

It's also about marketing in many cases. "2 discs" = "better value" to some.

Yeah I was hoping when Blu-Ray came out it would do away with multi-disc movies including features, but it's ok that the greater quality is what takes up the majority of the amount on the discs.

To understand their rationale for a 2-disc set, we first have to learn what size each of the discs are? First we need to pick a set, then determine which of the following is the scenario:

A. 2 BD50s (possibly)
B. 1 BD50 and 1 BD25 (more likely)
C. 2 BD25s (less likely)

Anyone have a multi-disc set and know how to determine a BD50 from a BD25 care to post which scenario we have, A, B, or C?

You make it seem like the market is flooded with multi disc sets? Off the top of my head, I can't even name 10 BD titles that are offered in multi disc sets.

So far I can not think of any recent 2 disc set that had both discs as 25GB BDs. They have both been 50GB BD or the movie on a 50GB and the extras on a 25GB.

but the extras are in hd as well so thats why its a 2 disc set which is a lot better then if it was a 1 disc version because then the extras would be in standard definition picture which would suck even more so then having a 2 disc set with the extras being in 1080p instead of 480p

Really? I haven't really seen a 4 disc HD DVD set, in regards to movies and not counting Blade Runner.

Some people are attracted to more discs. Like what they do with some DVDs where there's a special two-disc edition, and then a regular one-disc as well. More people are likely to think that the two-disc is better. Which in reality your only paying extra money for extra stuff that isn't that important. Unless you're an "extra" type of person.

Please, stop beating a dead horse already.

Find me a single double-disc set where the combined volume of the data on the two discs could have fit on one disc, and you'll have an argument. Until then, let's not have the same thread repeated ad nauseam by new members. Please.

(Okay, here's an example -- Oliver Stone's Alexander Revisited is two BD-25 discs instead of one BD-50. Why? Because the director wanted the film to be screened in two parts with an intermission, and Warner made this choice. But this is a very isolated and specific example.)

That's not completely fair. If you target your authoring project for two discs or one disc, you'd allocate your space and bit targets differently. For example, it's very likely Superbad could have fit all the content on one disc if they really wanted to.

Simple: the first disc contains the feature in the highest possible quality (lowest possible compression, lossless audio, etc.), and the second disc contains all the extras like making of featurettes, deleted scenes, etc.
