Warner Bros John Musker and Ron Clements Tackling DC Comic ‘Metal Men’ for Warner Animation

Quote:
Animation legends Ron Clements and John Musker, the acclaimed team that spent decades at Disney making movies such as The Little Mermaid, Aladdin and The Princess and the Frog, are heading to DC.

The duo have teamed up with Celeste Ballard, a writer who worked on Space Jam: A New Legacy, to tackle an animated feature on The Metal Men. Warner Animation Group is the home of the project, which is based on the longtime DC property.

Clements and Musker are producing and have written the treatment for the project, which they are eyeing to direct.

Probably a good idea making this animated. They’re pretty goofy characters and would look like a cartoon in live action. Might as well make the whole thing animated.

I was hoping DC would do a live-action version of the Metal Men. Also Metamorpho and Plastic Man.

Why do you think they left Disney?

I have no idea what The Metal Men is. I hope DC lets them make a 2D animation. Disney sure as shit won't. I won't even bother if it's full CG.

Bummed that Barry Sonnenfeld's version didn't make it. If anyone could have made the material work in live action, it would have been him.

The prospect of Clements and Musker making this is pretty exciting, though. I hope that Warner Animation brings its A-game for this one.

Well, my sisters are huge fans of Musker and Clements so they're definitely gonna want to see this even if they aren't big DC fans.

It is kind of weird to think of them as no longer being Disney employees, isn't it?

As much as I love hand drawn animation, I'd much rather watch a CGI film than Home on the Range or Brother Bear or Oliver and Company. It's time to understand that a medium doesn't determine whether a film is good or not.

Never said it did. Drawn animation is better. With DC and Marvel stuff in particular it's a big deciding factor for me. I would have found some way to watch Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse if it was drawn. I don't give a damn about Spider-Man or most superheroes, but I'd still watch a high quality drawn animation about him for the craft. Very little about CG animation wows me. That all the animated subjects are composed of digital wireframes that can be easily manipulated makes it more sterile and wooden to me. The three dimensions make it too close to real life, thus more boring. I wished all of Luca looked more like the end credits. I knew this about myself all along, but I only decided to stop watching most of it after the big studios had given me almost nothing but for years and years. Yeah, I think even back in the days of Ants, Toy Story 1 and Roughnecks: Starship Troopers Chronicles, when I was a kid, I found it inferior.

The DC animations being in 2D gives me hope, but these two directors being as big as they are makes me less hopeful. More success equals a higher chance of CG. Maybe we can have a combination of the two with the duo. High quality animation in 2D. DC's animations typically look like shit.

Cool! I remember reading the comic when I was a kid. It stuck out more than others.

Q: What can you tell us about your upcoming Metal Men adaptation?

John Musker: Ron Clements and I both grew up reading the comic book during its first appearance in the 1960s. We liked the mix of science and animation-friendly character comedy, and the personality-driven comic relationships in the books. We think it could be a really fun movie and introduce a wider audience to these characters.

They betrayed Disney for Warner Bros. I'll never watch any of their movies ever again!

These guys understand storytelling. I'm surprised they haven't been given a chance with a live action movie.

Do you think this film will still happen or will Zaslav destroy it as well?
