If Heavy Metal came out on Blu-ray!?! Lets just say I would buy it! Also patiently waiting for Nightmare before Christmas.

It's ok though, I would much rather haves films like blonde ambition be released on blu first!

Heavy metal would likely need a lot of restoration. The DVD is pretty poor, not as a transfer so much, but the quality of the film they mastered it from it seems.

Stop-motion technique on 35mm film. Took three years to complete filming.

35mm is standard 4:3 ratio, right? Sorry, I don't know much about film.

This particular film has an aspect ratio of 1.66:1. From my understanding of film, it is not so much that the film dictates what the aspect ratio of the movie. Rather, its the post production. So what aspect ratio is presented is purely due to the director's choice on how they wish to present the film by cropping frames.

I agree. Great animated movie, but it would need a similar restoration treatment Disney is currently doing with Sleeping Beauty. If that happens I'll buy it.

About 10+ years ago, HEAVY METAL was restored and I saw it at a theatre. It look fantastic. However, I believe that restoration was not used for the DVD master.

As for 35mm film it, is actually academy frame(1.37:1) than 1.66:1. 1.66:1 is/was primarily for European audiences. For FLAT movies, it is cropped down to 1.85:1 and scope movies, the orginal 2.35:1 or 2.4:1 images is squeezed anamorphicly into the same 35mm frame. It is then played back with an anamorphic lens attachment to spread out the image on the screen.

While I would LOVE to own a restored/remastered blu-ray of Heavy Metal, I doubt there are enough fans out there for the companies to make a profit IMHO
