Default Apple TV+'s "Sugar"

“Sugar” is a contemporary, unique take on one of the most popular and significant genres in literary, motion picture and television history: the private detective story. Academy Award nominee Colin Farrell stars as John Sugar, an American private investigator on the heels of the mysterious disappearance of Olivia Siegel, the beloved granddaughter of legendary Hollywood producer Jonathan Siegel. As Sugar tries to determine what happened to Olivia, he will also unearth Siegel family secrets; some very recent, others long-buried.

The series also stars Kirby (“The Sandman”), Amy Ryan (“The Wire”), Dennis Boutsikaris, Nate Corddry (“Mindhunter”), Alex Hernandez (“Invasion”), and James Cromwell (“Succession”), with guest stars Anna Gunn (“Breaking Bad”) and Sydney Chandler (“Don't Worry Darling”).

“Sugar” is created by Mark Protosevich who also executive produces. Audrey Chon and Simon Kinberg executive produce for Genre Films, marking their second series with Apple TV+ under Kinberg’s overall deal following “Invasion.” Colin Farrell, Sam Catlin, Scott Greenberg and Chip Vucelich also serve as executive producers. The series was directed by Fernando Meirelles (“City of God,” “Two Popes”), who also executive produces, and Adam Arkin (“The Offer”), who also co-executive produces.

A while back is was announced as a blend of detective noir and sci-fi, but you wouldn't know from watching the trailer ...

Was a bit confused by the blurb until I realized that a certain actress (whose performances I've enjoyed considerably) significantly shortened her name sometime last year...

Pretentious much? Or did they just need to fill out the word count on the press release?

Always up for a detective story though, & Farrell's never been less than watchable.

Calling it now: The black English woman will be a figment of his imagination.

Yep, wikipedia still lists it as a science fiction drama...

I remember when I started watching Dark. I hadn't heard much about it and was expecting a typical European noir crime series, and then they started time traveling.

I doubt Sugar will be anywhere near as good, but maybe it has a twist ...

Yeah, I'm getting a bit of an unreality vibe from Farrell's character. Maybe not as much as say Shutter Island, but it's definitely off somehow. I'm in.

I really enjoyed the first two episodes. It does have a noir vibe with some rather interesting cuts of classic films spliced in. Sugar is a lover of classic films so it makes sense that they include them.
The sci-fi element as mentioned has not shown itself yet.
Sugar is dealing with a
[Show spoiler] medical condition that seems to be something like a brain tumor. His hand shakes and his vision blurs with one incident not actually happening.

Great start and I'm looking forward to watching how this unfolds.

Best if you go in cold and not watching the trailer.

Episode 3 was weird. I think the twist is gonna be that
[Show spoiler]Colin Farrell's character is a vampire.

Well, it just got weirder.
[Show spoiler]I wasn't sure that I saw what I saw when he deflected that bullet. I thought he might've just smacked the gun, and then that bag of swirly stuff that Henry brought to patch him up seemed pretty strange, then when he 'went home' at the very end.

Was in the middle of watching the show and I saw your speculation which I wish I didn't because it all tracked and I thought I had been spoiled, but now I wish your guess was right.

[Show spoiler]Yeah the alien twist was too mundane. It should've been either vampires or computer simulation.

Watched the first episode and I'm intrigued. There's definitely some unexplained things going on that caught my attention. I noticed a quick moment where a character's
[Show spoiler]face momentarily blurs.

I'm eager to know more.

It really takes a turn in episode 3. I'm really eager to see how this goes.
I wish we didn't need to wait a week for a new episode.

I obviously took note of what he did with the chopsticks in the first episode, but I didn't know we'd quite be going where we did go I was entirely unaware of the sci-fi angle. It's a really, really good show though.

I watched the first episode or two a few weeks ago, but hadn't gone back...but now I'm going to stop reading, because this sounds really interesting LOL. Plus, I get to look at pretty Colin so bonus, LOL.

Another show that started great and then...ugh

Not a fan of the twist. But with only 2 left I can slog through it like Monarch.

I was thinking along the lines of he's from some covert Jason Bourne/Treadstone government type program. Not the
[Show spoiler]blue alien from outer space program.
Interesting turn of events.

binged all the released episodes over the last two days and love it. I took the ending of last weeks episode, that you all think is a twist, as a hallucination, him being delirious from being injured.
like wabo said, I assume he is part of a Treadstone type program.
