Default American Psycho!!!!!!!

After the Star Trek I almost didnt even start this thread because of some of the immaturity! But hey I wont let no one stop me. Also this is a forum for discussing films! Anyway I just watched this film for the first time and it was decent! I may be lost or whatever but I didnt get the message or the ending. I know this is Sussudio's fav films so maybe he can clear it up for me but I was kinda confused with the ending! Anyway overall it wasnt great but it wasnt bad either. Atleast I didnt pay 19 dollars for it as I did Star Wack, I mean Star Trek! Hahah! Anyway thoughts on American Psycho? Got Em!!

American Psycho is a brilliant film, IMHO. I am a fan of just about any film where smart dialog meets personal narratives. Not really a horror-type film to me, but rather more of a twisted comedy.

I wrote a small user review in this site's movie listing for it.

"Got 'em."

P.S. Star Trek (2009) was awesome!

The book probably lays out everything smoother than the film, but I still haven't read it yet. I think all of the violence is made-up in his head. The big giveaway is when he only shoots a couple times at the police, yet there's this gigantic explosion.

I first saw this film a few years back and have seen it a couple times subsequent to that. I think it is one of those films that is meant to be vague and confusing, kinda like Vanilla Sky. I liked it and will be purchasing it on Blu some time this year for sure.

I read the book and I'll tell you, there is no big reason to read it if you saw the film IMO. The movie got the ideas down pat. The only reason to read the book is if you want more of what is presented in the film; not expanded, just more.

As to the ending, it is purposefully ambiguous, just as the book is. It is up to you to decided if he is a crazy killer or just completely crazy.

I really like this movie. I can watch it over and over but I generally skip the really nasty stuff (like the sex scenes). The character is very interesting to me. I guess that is why I like Mr. Brooks and Dexter, somewhat similar.

Love it!

Someone at work kept telling me that I needed to see this but I just assumed that it was some kind of slasher flick. One day while watching the IFC channel I caught the scene of him chasing the girl down the hall with the chainsaw. Couldn't turn the channel after that and watched the rest. I then borrowed the coworkers DVD and finally watced the whole thing.

Like Rob said..smart dialog and twisted comedy.

CZAR did you know that it was directed by a woman?

Also check out the deleted scenes too.

BTW, Does anybody know if 'American Psycho II' is any good?

.

The U.S. version (MPEG-2) is suppose to be inferior to the Australian release (MPEG-4).

Any idea if the Australian release was region free?

And in any case to the people who think it was all in Bateman's head, what about the detective liking the same CD Bateman used when he was killing Allen? Coincidence?

I should've stated instead of just the violence, everything was made-up in his head. To me, he's completely schizophrenic (a'la Norton in Fight Club). He'd think of anything to fill the boredom of his over-materialistic yuppie lifestyle.

Yep, it's region free: https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Ameri...-Blu-ray/3632/

But his secretary had an encounter with the detective when they were discussing about Paul Allen.

Paul Allen could have really disappeared, left the country or something.

I think the ambiguity is so well done that we could debate this endlessly. I like to think that he really did do everything and that society was just to self absorbed to notice.

I believe the murders didn't happen and that Allen was never murdered but I was wondering about the whole encounter with the detective. And the marks on his sheets that he sent to the cleaners.

I think Bateman said it was cranberry juice on his sheets

The detective part is interesting. A PI would interview colleagues for a missing person, I imagine. Apparently, Dafoe's scenes were shot twice; once normally, and once where he was suspicious of Bateman, like he knew he was guilty. We could chalk that up to Bateman's paranoia.

I don't think that was a big giveaway at all. I believe Patrick hallucinating everything would be an extremely cheap way for the movie to go out and I personally don't think that was the intentions of author or director, though of course I'm not either so who knows for sure (but I have spoken with the director...it was difficult not to stare at her in awe ).

For me, I see the book/movie as a reflection of the yuppie era and how everyone is obsessed with their fancy apartments, restaurants, clothes, hair, and business cards. They are interchangeable people, literally a bunch of suits (this is referenced several times in the movie via confusion over who is handling what "account," or mixing up names, especially when Paul mistakes Patrick for someone else). Most significant to this theme is the ending in which Patrick's lawyer is convinced he had met with Paul...when it was just another faceless suit. In the end, Patrick has not and can not be stopped, trapped as a product of his own system. I'm not negating the other interpretation, as I believe the beauty of this movie is the ability to see it two ways, almost mirroring Patrick's two "personalities." But I personally find fault with the opinion that it was all in his head as I believe every minute of it.

CZAR -- glad you had time to check this one out. It deserves multiple viewings IMO (last time I checked I was up to 22 )
