Default Philips UHD Blu-ray player - BDP7501

Thought it was worth spinning this off into its own discussion.

4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Player
At least so far, Philips is one of only three companies to announce a 4K UHD Blu-ray player, along with Samsung and Panasonic. The Philips BDP7501 features HDR support, which means that it should fit in well with any of the 4K TVs the company has announced this year, but perhaps the most interesting aspect of the player is its compact design. The player looks more like a set-top box than a standard Blu-ray player, and the minimalist look is striking.

The BDP7501 features built-in support for both the HEVC and VP9 codecs, so streaming 4K content from Netflix, YouTube and others will work as intended, and should look great. Upscaling for non-4K content is also included. Both HDMI 2.0a and 1.4a are supported, and connectivity is provided via both wired Ethernet and 802.11ac Wi-Fi. No set release date has been announced, but Philips says the BDP7501 will ship in spring 2016 and will sell for under $400.

Don't like it. Reminds me of those horrible little DVD/Bluray players you can still possibly get for £30 from Currys/Wallmart (probably).

I want my first player to be a tank.

This would be a nice player for anyone that sets it on the top of a cabinet or shelf under their TV, as opposed to in a media stack or shelving. I much prefer the "tank" size and look of the players personally.

So far we have a curved samsung, a non 3D panasonic, and a philips giant appleTV looking box.

I'm leaning toward the Phillips myself, assuming the Panasonic will be more expensive.

But honestly it's going to come down mostly to release date. If the Samsung ships in March, and the other 2 don't ship till later, I'll have a Samsung.

The Philips will probably be the cheapest option, so probably a good one for people who want to adopt the format early but may upgrade to a better player down the line.

It looks like a big differentiator between these could be audio. Since I'm using a pathetic 2.1 soundbar (which I love so f*off), I have no need for all that fancy stuff on the Panasonic.

Only reason I see now why I won't end up with the Phillips is if it doesn't release at the same time as the Samsung.

Good logic that. It could be why this is possibly the player that is interesting me the most out of three announced so far.

I am loving this Philips already!!!!!!! Seriously, when I first saw it's diminuitive (sp.) size earlier today, it shocked the Hell out of me! I also love how Philips paid so much attention to making sure that the 7501, along with all of their 4K Ultra HD sets, are going to have the HDR (High Dynamic Range), which is going to be so critical as far as the entire color gamut is concerned.

As long as this little baby (remember, I live in a tiny dwelling) is built like a tank, performs well, and has a double-pronged AC-line input (not a cheap, single jack AC input like on Sony's 1500, 3500, 5500 and 6500 players), I think I'm gonna be sold on this one!

I'll see if I can get some more info from Philips and let you all know some more about the 7501.

Small nitpick, but Philips only has one L, not two - its even pretty bold in the pic in the OP.

That's because the founders of the company all had the name Philips with just one "L", not 2"L"s. These people, I believe, originated in the Netherlands/Dutch regions of Europe more than a century ago (I think close to 150 years, in fact). Philips has a long history, indeed.

Oh, there will be a pop quiz on this. hee hee!

If the price is fair, Id def consider getting this until one of the bigger companies release 2nd and 3rd Gen players.

Definitely won't be spending big money on a Phillips UHD Bluray player. I've had a few of their regular Bluray players that were cheaply made at high prices which lasted only a few months at a time & wouldn't play most of my bluray collection after firmware updates. I eventually switched to all Sony bluray players which have all lasted quite a while but eventually all lasers go bad but for now my Sony players are still going strong so hopefully Sony will eventually release a reasonably priced UHD Bluray player.

It looks pretty neat. It's size definitely has me wanting to know more about it. If I can fit it better into my cramped entertainment center, then that is a plus to me. And if it's cheaper than the others, so much the better!

Disappointed that Sony seems to be waiting to see if the 4K UHD format takes off before releasing a player. I'd rather settle for a Philips than the curved piece of junk that Samsung is putting out. Hopefully they'll release at the same time.

I am confused as to if this play supports Dolby Vision. I have seen it reported that it does then another article from CES says it does not. Also do we know if it has dual HDMI outs like the Samsung.

Post Philips 4K Ultra HD BD player BDP7501

I just built a .pdf data sheet for Philips 4K UHD BD player, model BDP7501. Nice overall build quality with a solid aluminum chassis.

Launching May 2016 with a pre-order special offer.

Enjoy!

You need a special 4k player to play 4k titles, right?

Yes, and earlier this week at CES Samsung, Philips and Panasonic announced their first 4K Ultra BD players.

Samsung sis scheduled to launch first, mid March followed by Philips, May, 2016. Panasonic has not yet announced the launch date.

Ultra HD Blu-ray titles are also beginning to release March 2016.
