hmmmm... I'm going with guys who if they are in a movie, my interest is immediate, regardless of plot... as they come to mind:

Gary Oldman
Denzell Washington
Don Cheadle
Laurence Fishburn
Tom Hanks
Morgan Freeman
Will Smith
Matt Damon
Russell Crowe
The guys who created 40-year old virgin... I'm too old for that stuff to slay me, and it still does... Can't wait for their next one "year one".

Man, I must be really bored at work to do this, but here's mine:

1. Marlon Brando (still the greatest actor ever)
2. Daniel Day-Lews
3. Robert DeNiro
4. Paul Newman
5. Al Pacino
6. Philip Seymour Hoffman (who, by the end of his career, will be giving Brando a run for his money)
7. Edward Norton
8. Anthony Hopkins
9. Sean Penn
10.Viggo Mortensen (based solely on A History of Violence and Eastern Promises).

Didn't put a lot of thought into this, but it's still not a bad list

Wow, you and I agree on 7 out of 10 (and I probably would have included Russell Crowe if I had spent a few more minutes thinking about it). I always thought the Irish were film-savvy, and this proves it.

I would go with JayAuritt's list, only I would 86 Sean Penn and Anthony Hopkins. I would replace them in no particular order with Sam Rockwell, the guy is young, but kicks ass. And Aaron Eckheart. Neither have done it like Penn or Hopkins, but I think Hopkins is weak, and while Penn is a fantastic actor, I just can't stand the guy.

And Denzel is the most overrated actor of our time. There. I said it.

Maybe it has been luck of the draw, but there is no such thing as an awful Denzel movie. They range from very watchable to great. In my opinion he is the black Al Pacino with more range. By that I mean he brings his own personality to every character instead of becoming the character. Gary Oldman is the best ever at becoming the character.

The one with Crowe back before Russell was famous was awful--just remembered, it was called Virtuousity.

My personal preference is Edward Norton. I don't think anyone can touch him. American History X may be the best performance I've ever seen. After him I like DeNiro, and a lot of people that most consider "character actors," like Hoffman, Buscemi, John C. Reilly, etc.
