Default PS3 help...possible move to UK

Hello - US servicemember here who might get orders to the UK. I know that Blu's are the same region, so that is good...but will my PS3 work there? I know I could bring my old TV and use a transformer to power it - but real question is if I can change the output to PAL on a PS3 and buy a tv there - or if I need a UK PS3 for that.

the ps3 has a universal power supply; i use a HK/JP PS3 without a power converter (i'm in the US).

if you are using an HDTV, you will be fine in terms of HD content (at least) - 720p, 1080i, 1080p etc are all independent of PAL vs NTSC. i do not know how SDTV stuff is displayed, but you might have a problem with that.

and as the above poster noted, england is region B in terms of BD, and the DVD region is also different, so be aware of that.

As stated, it has a Universal power supply, just switch the power lead to a 3 pin one used on a UK PC or kettle and a 3 Amp fuse.

No problems connecting it to a HDTV.

As for Blu-rays, you can buy US titles from Movietyme or Play.com (International section), with free delivery.

Many UK Blu-rays are also region free.

US PS3 is incompatible with PAL video format and region 2 DVDs.

Thanks for the info...if I get confirmed to go, I'll be back for more.

Best news is the free shipping for U.S. titles...I was worried about that one.

No NEED for stepdown. I live in UK with Japanese NTSC-J PS3, and also UK PAL PS3. I can confirm, no step-up/step-down needed. Japanese is 100V, UK is 220-240V

Depends: If you use HD resolution TV, then there is no need to buy TV in UK. PAL and NTSC are obsolete in HDTV. WHile if u use SDTV, then you need to buy either UK PS3 or PAL TV

Blu in UK and USA are not in the same region (UK is region B, USA is Region A), but why will you buy titles from UK??? Import it from USA as it is hell a lot cheaper, and it will help US number.

ALso, brush up your English... use british english only
for example: it's "customise", not "customize"

Here's a short summary of region information:-
  • US DVD region: 1
  • UK DVD region: 2
  • US BD region: A
  • UK BD region: B

As stated above, the voltage in the UK is 230v AC 50 Hz. Step down transformers are readily available in the UK from outlets such as Maplins.

PAL / NTSC incompatibility issues are not worth bothering about. Most TVs in the UK are multistandard these days... If you connect via HDMI the problems are non existent.

You could of course bring your US PS3, and but a region B over here and have the best of both worlds

PS... Apparently there are rumours in the USA which state that we like our beer warm...

WE DO NOT!!!

There is plenty of cold beer over here. Even our traditional beers should be served cool and not warm. That is why it is kept in a cellar

I use this site for checking region information when buying HD-DVD exclusives on BD imports.

You can see which BD are region locked or not, If not you can buy locally (when you get to the UK) also.

Also, hope you like mayo on your fries I never tried it but my former Brother in law from from Belgium and apparently it's normal over there.

  • Agreed.

A step down transformer is not needed to use a US PS3 in the UK.

That's not necessarily the issue. The US PS3 does not play PAL DVDs. That may or may not be important, but it's pertinent information for any one interested in exportation.

Modern digital TVs are generally multi-standard in Europe, while US TVs generally are not. If the video signal is connected by HDMI, then it has lost most of what makes it PAL or NTSC - except for the frame rate. HDMI does not guarantee to carry the signal at the source or display resolution and frame rate (though it probably will). It's being HDready that guarantees compatibility not HDMI.

BR, Nick
