Default The Horrible Dr. Hichcock 4K UHD (1962)

Coming in January from VS:
Quote:
At last we can confirm a title we have been hinting at for several months: This January, we will be releasing the world 4K UHD debut of Riccardo Freda’s landmark Italian Gothic horror, THE HORRIBLE DR. HICHCOCK, which we have exclusively restored from a brand new 4K scan of its 35mm camera negative, with the alternate version also reconstructed entirely from film elements. Our definitive edition will feature all newly recorded interviews, including with assistant director Marcello Avallone and, at last, star Barbara Steele!

This is just one of many Italian films planned for 2024, including more gialli, gothic horror, and 80s supernatural madness.

THE HORRIBLE DR. HICHCOCK will be available as part of our 2024 Subscriber Week (Jan 1-7) lineup, which will also see daily unveilings of our next VSU, VSA, and several other BIG surprises!

Meanwhile, here’s a first look at the hard case artwork for HICHCOCK:

I jumped on the Radiance Blu-ray.

It's nice though, and this should look great in 4K. Being that there wasn't (another) US release at the same time, I should have known it would be arriving soon from somebody.

Finally offloaded the cut Olive Blu-ray though, so guess that's a win!

Weird, this seems way outside of their usual wheelhouse. Very good news, though!! I never picked up the Olive version cause I was annoyed by how they had zero extras and zero subtitles and their releases were not as cheap as others at the time.

Wow. From Vinegar Syndrome! They do great work but some of their choices are baffling. This is any easy buy.

It makes sense to me. You've got to balance out the really obscure titles with some better known.

Curious if this will have Italian audio like the Radiance release. VS is getting this from Paramount and don't remember Paramount ever releasing this with that audio option.

Oh this is uncertain? Then I'll hold off until confirmation. Definitely not watching this in English. I need the original Italian audio.

According to the Wiki:

"Each cast member spoke his or her own language when filming."

This means the original Italian audio is still going to be a dub. Also Radiance just released this on Blu-ray with both the original Italian version and the cut U.S. version. It wouldn't make any sense for VS to release the English only.

Yes I understand. This is how all of Italian cinema operated, but most cases with some very rare exceptions the scripts were in Italian and the director would only oversee the Italian dub while the international studios would oversee the overseas dubbing work (as well as the editing in many cases). I like to get the original vision as seen by director and writer(s). Either way I hope you're right and we get both.

I don't need to double dip on this when I'm satisfied with the Blu-ray.

But when are we going to get a Blu-ray release of Barbara Steele's "The Ghost"? It is the only one still missing.

This is the problem with so many companies rereleasing the same films we already own when we still have major gaps in our Blu-ray catalog. That DVD of "The Ghost" is sticking up on my shelf like a sore thumb.

Unlike Radiance, the screenshots of Vinegar are without slight yellowness.

Quote:
Brilliant scientist, Professor Bernard Hichcock, harbors a secret fascination with the corpses of beautiful young women. His perverse desires are so strong that he has developed a unique serum capable of placing people into a death-like state; a drug he has decided to experiment with on his wife, Margaretha. However, after accidentally giving her a lethal dose, the doctor panics and covers up his wife’s death. Hichcock soon remarries, this time to the orphaned Cynthia, whom he brings to live with him at his isolated castle. Shortly after her arrival, Cynthia begins to experience increasingly strange and ghastly goings-on. While her new husband dismisses these seemingly supernatural occurrences, Cynthia becomes convinced that someone - or something - is lurking in the castle and her loving husband might know more than he’s letting on…

A crucial early work in the Italian gothic horror canon, THE HORRIBLE DR. HICHCOCK, from director Riccardo Freda (Tragic Ceremony) and screenwriter Ernesto Gastaldi (The Strange Vice of Mrs. Wardh), is a macabre period chiller which stars Barbara Steele (Black Sabbath) alongside Robert Flemyng (The Blood Beast Terror), Silvano Tranquilli (So Sweet, So Dead), and Harriet Medin (Blood and Black Lace). Graced with eye-poppingly colorful cinematography from Raffaele Masciocchi (The Ghost), Vinegar Syndrome proudly presents the UHD debut of this twisted and suspenseful classic in a brand new and exclusive 4K restoration of its original negative, and loaded with fresh extras including interviews with second assistant director Marcello Avallone and star Barbara Steele!

directed by: Riccardo Freda
starring: Barbara Steele, Robert Flemyng, Silvano Tranquilli, Harriet Medin, Maria Teresa Vianello, Spencer Williams, Aldo Cristiani, Evaristo Signorini, Giovanni Querrel

I know UHD is going to look technically better, but I think I’d rather get the Radiance for now for the convenience of being in the UK and the different sets of extras.
