Default The Best and the Worst iTunes 4K Presentations.

I've had Apple TV for a year now, generally I'm quite pleased with how I can watch 4K movies. So far the best presentations have been Alien, Blade Runner 2049, Interstellar, Dunkirk, The War of the Worlds, 2001, to name but a few.

However, there have been a few titles that I have had refunded due to the lacklustre 4K image quality . So far I've had Goodfellas, The Silence of the Lambs and Superman the movie refunded. Superman (which is Dolby Vision) was actually worse than its Blu-ray counterpart.

The same can be said for Goodfellas and The Silence of the Lambs. I know streaming does not have the same bit-rate compared to a disc. But if the studios can get it right on the titles in the top paragraph, why not the aforementioned.

Anyone else had disappointing experiences with Apple TV 4K movies?

I've not seen The Silence of the Lambs or Superman the movie on iTunes. I do have the iTunes version of Goodfellas though. From what I understand many people were equally disappointed with the UHD Bluray of Goodfellas, so I don't think this is specific to the iTunes version.

I compared a few UHD discs when I first purchased my Apple 4K TV and I couldn't notice any difference in the picture quality. My TV is a 55 inch Sony OLED, so maybe with a bigger screen it would be more noticeable.

The most impressive 4K iTunes movies I have seen are Black Hawk Down, Alien, the Deadpool movies, Bladerunner the final cut and Pacific Rim.

Silence of the Lambs has never looked better than in 4k DV. It’s an older film and isn’t supposed to have that clean digital look.

Silence of the Lambs looked amazing to me.
In fact I don't really find a title that looks lackluster to me. Kick-Ass and 3:10 to Yuma come to mind that aren't big upgrades.

Of all the ones I watched...

The worst was Bourne Legacy - I'm convinced the master is incorrect. The 1080p presentation has better color and detail.

The most surprising to me was Elysium. Looks and sounds amazing in 4k.

Huh, my version of Elysium is still HD. When was it upgraded?

Elysium has been 4K Dolby Vision + Dolby Atmos in the US iTunes storefront for a while I think.

Unless of course you’re in the UK then it’s only HD.

Indeed, another frustration for all of us UK folk, but if distributors are different between markets, I guess it is what it is...

I use VUDU 4K HDR. I hear the Apple TV 4K box is better. But in general, I have been disappointed with streaming 4K. I purchased Avengers endgame and it looked 1080p at best. Even the standard blu ray blows it out of the water in terms of sharpness and resolution.

I’ve read from a couple of people that Endgame and, well, most movies have a better 4K quality when played through MA instead of VUDU. I’m waiting for MA to make more movies available in Dolby Atmos before opening an account and using as the primary Disney 4K solution. I’ll stick with VUDU until then.

I've returned Watchmen 4K. Don't like the colour grading at all. Much too dark. I prefer the HD version.

I think iTunes “Heat” 4K HDR presentation is way too dark for my tastes.
