Crowd-funded by a Maryland filmmaker.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects...ture?ref=video

Release date April 11.
From Amazon: Young newlywed Leda is haunted by strange visions in a hypnotic retelling of the Greek myth. A stunning and eerie journey into fantasy, Samuel Tressler IV's first feature transports the ancient myth of Leda and the Swan to the dark forests and deep lakes that surround a mid-19th century mansion. Stereoscopic imagery carries characters and the audience into a realm where dreams, nightmares and memories bleed together. Told without words and filmed almost exclusively in black-and-white, Leda invokes poetry and horror in its fable of birth, death and other-worldly desires. Both 3D and 2D versions included on one Blu-ray disc. Bonus features include: Stills Gallery, Deleted Scenes, Trailer, Audio Commentary

Reviews for Leda on letterboxd sing the praises of the 3D, and they're not usually keen on the format.

strong pedigree behind it

Quote:
We are extremely excited to be working with Stereographer Vince Toto (Dredd 3D) as a consultant on Leda and hope to raise the remaining funds necessary to bring him on set as our full fledged stereographer. When joining the project, Vince expressed his enthusiasm in working on a project that digs more creatively into the world of virtual depth than many of the Hollywood projects he has helmed.

On the other hand, this quote from the film maker makes me want to scream with delight in agreement.

Too often is 3D seen and used as simple spectacle rather than an intentional storytelling tool.

If only there were more like him. So, Dredd connections aside, I'm very much looking forward to this.

Hmm, he also did Grotto (awful) and Torrente 4 (generally mild but the opening credits are amazing). I might row back my expectations. Loved Dredd tho.

I don't know either of those other two, so that's interesting to hear. I guess most - if not all - stereographers are capable of doing at least a very decent job - if the director/DOP etc let them do what needs to be done to make the 3D as good as it can be. Sounds like this fella is more than on board with prioritising the importance of the stereo, whatever his stereographer's pedigree may be, so I'm sold.

I think Demetri Portelli (Hugo, TS Spivet) also did 47 Ronin, which for me is a good example of a brilliant artist not being given the chance to shine. (I think popular opinion is more on side with me there than my views on Dredd! Then again, who knows - maybe old Demetri thinks Ronin was his masterwork.)

Sounds pretty artsy-fartsy. Indiegogo, experimental, no dialog, b/w. Right up my alley.

Snow Girl and the Dark Crystal and Box Office 3D are also super flat. Of what is available, Dredd is by far the best of Toto's work. Ada Vaughan is also credited as a producer, and her profile is full of unproduced 3D projects.

Angel's Egg was the first visual reference that came to mind after watching the trailer. I'll give it a shot.

I'm not sure if you intended it to be but, for me, that is a textbook example of damning with faint praise..!

3D fan who grew up in Maryland. Pre-ordered. Hopefully its not too experimental a la Protocol. I do struggle a little with artsy-fartsy flicks but Im good if its just artsy lol...

Joe you are so right! An exciting time for us 3D aficionados!

Hmm...decisions decisions. Grindhouse doesnt usually cut any breaks on new items. Wonder if this means the Amazon price will also drop closer to the release and end up being the better deal with Prime shipping.

I preordered Leda and also ordered Coppola’s Twixt for an artsy-fartsy double-feature night.
