Looking back it is quite amazing just how many great and diverse films he appeared in.

His run of performances from the mid 90s to the 2000s is something that's very overlooked. Even in just a supporting role of the lesser Lumet Night Falls On Manhattan he was phenomenal. Definitely one of the best actors in the last 50 year's.

Should have not only been nominated for The Sweet Hereafter, but won. Sorry Nicolson.

Absolute legend. Surprised me with his excellent comedic timing as well in Brazil and The Fifth Element.

It's only a week ago I re-watched Greystoke; loved the humanism of his character in that film; similar to Anthony Hopkins in Lynch's The Elephant Man.

For me I'd have loved to see a character drama with Hurt and Holm, but nothing to my knowledge ever happened. All we have is Alien where they don't really interact with each other.

RIP Mr Holm; i was lucky enough to see him at the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford a good number of years ago, an absolute powerhouse of an actor. He also starred as Frodo in the 1981 BBC radio dramatisation of Lord Of The Rings, a fact that i'm sure Peter Jackson was fully aware of.
